JOHN HENRY RINCK
John Henry Rinck, 84, Scofield,
died July 9, 2005. A prayer service was
held July 13 at Forest Grove Memorial
Chapel followed by interment at St.
Francis Cemetery in Roy.
Mr. Rinck was born July 4, 1921, in
Manning, to Antone and Edith M. Bene-
fiel Rinck. He graduated from Banks
High School in 1939 and served in the
U.S. Navy during World War II.
In 1945, he marred Roberta C.
Rodier. He was a self-employed logger
and farmer. In 1963, until he retired in
1986, he was a heavy equipment oper
ator for the Oregon State Forestry
Dept. He also drove a school bus in
Banks for several years.
Survivors include his wife; a son,
Tom of Buxton; a daughter, Donna Her-
inckx of Banks; seven grandchildren;
five great-grandchildren; nieces and
nephews.
Forest Grove Memorial Chapel was
in charge of arrangements.
CHARLES ALVIN “RED” THOMAS
Charles Alvin “Red" Thomas, 92,
Aloha, died July 12, 2005. Private inter
ment will be held.
Mr. Thomas was born June 11,
1913, in Glenfield, North Dakota, to
Frank K. and Loe E. (Noble) Thomas.
He was raised in Glenfield. He served
in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
In 1939, he married Genevieve
Ellen Bingham. They made their home
in Wisconsin until moving to Vanport in
1942 and to Vernonia in 1943. In 1958,
they moved to Forest Grove, then later
to Hillsboro and to McMinnville in 1985.
He moved to Aloha in 2003.
He worked in the timber industry,
with his own logging operation for sev
eral years, and worked at the Oregon-
American Lumber Mill as a mainte
nance man on the monorail until it
closed. In McMinnville, he owned and
operated a small engine repair busi
ness.
He was preceded in death by his
wife; two sons, Dennis and Jerry; a
grandson; a great-grandson; two broth
ers and four sisters.
Survivors include four sons, Charles
A., II of Mercedes, Texas, Frank R. of
Aloha, John T. of Hillsboro and David
D. of Michigan; two daughters, Cleo
Thomas of Beaverton and Linda G.
Gates of Aloha; 12 grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren; one great-great-
grandchild; nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to

LAURA G. FLOETER YOUNG
Laura G. Floeter Young, 58, Scap
poose, died July 10, 2005. Funeral
services were held July 13 at Bayview
Cemetery in Warren.
Mrs. Young was born December 4,
1946, in Portland, to Walter Allen and
Doris Isabell (Weber) Floeter. She lived
most of her life in Vernonia and Scap
poose.
In 1991, she married Bill Young.
She was a manager at Bonneville Pow
er Administration for 32 years, retiring
as a GS14 on April 1, 2005.
Survivors include her husband; her
daughter, Tanya Wehage of Tillamook;
a step-son, Robert Young of New Mex
ico; a step-daughter, Debbie Donald
son of Scappoose; her mother of Scap
poose; one brother, Walter Floeter Jr. of
Beaverton; two sisters, Cherlyn New
comer of Scappoose and Susan Rem
sen of Vernonia; five grandchildren; two
nieces and one nephew.

The Vernonia City Council will hold
a Public Hearing on August 1, 2005 at
7:00 p.m. in the Chamber Room of City
Hall at 1001 Bridge Street, Vernonia
OR.
The purpose of this hearing is to no
tify the public of the City’s intent to in
stall bicycle and pedestrian improve
ments on the north and south sides of
Bridge Street from Texas Ave to River
side Drive. The funding for the im
provements is from a grant from the
Oregon Department of Transportation.
The meeting agenda will include a dis
cussion of the construction, design re
view and public input. Public comments
and written testimony are welcomed.
The meeting location is accessible
to persons with disabilities. A request
for an interpreter for the hearing im
paired or for other accommodations for
persons with disabilities should be
made at least 48 hours prior to public

The City of Vernonia is seeking indi
viduals interested in serving their com
munity on a new “ad hoc” committee.
The purpose of this committee would
be to investigate the feasibility of a City
Tree Ordinance and City Tree Board.
The purpose of the Tree Board would
be to study, investigate, develop and
administer a written plan for the care,
preservation, pruning, planting, replant
ing, removal or disposition of trees and
shrubs in parks, along streets, and in
other public areas. The committee
would make recommendations to City
Council.
Persons interested in serving on
this committee should submit a request
to serve to City Council or call with in
quiries to Kate Conley, City Recorder,
at 503-429-5291. All requests must be
submitted to Kate Conley, City
Recorder at City Hall, 1001 Bridge St,
Vernonia OR 97064 by August 31,
