August 2, 2005, from 6 to 8
p.m. at Anderson Park. The
Vernonia Fire Department,
Metro West Ambulance, Ameri
can Red Cross, Columbia
County Sheriff's Office will all
be participating. Life Flight pos
sibly could be landing if sched
uling works out. I have received
several prize donations for the
free drawings throughout the
evening, including a $50 gift
card to Target! Come out for
free food and a chance to take
a stand against crime and vio
lence!
I had an article topic request
from a citizen the other day.
She brought her dog into the
station that had been attacked
and severely injured by a fami
ly of raccoons. On July 4, we
had a young girl bitten by a
“friendly” raccoon at Anderson
Park and other reports of baby
opossums and skunk families
around the area. The police de
partment often gets calls about
these types of animals in and
around people’s property.
r le a s e r e m e rn u e r uie&t# enn-
mals are wild regardless of how
friendly or affectionate they
may appear. They are also
somewhat protected by Oregon
Department of Fish & Wildlife
(ODFW) statutes. According to
the ODFW you can’t even trap
these animals without a permit
from their office. Also remem
ber it is illegal to discharge a
firearm within the city limits. Of
course, if the animal is attack
ing you or your pets you are al
lowed to responsibly protect
yourself.
To discourage nomadic ani
mals like raccoons, skunks,
and opossums seeking resi
dence around your home,
make sure you secure all possi
ble food sources. Make sure
garbage is in sealed containers
and don’t leave pet food out. If
you want more information on
dealing with wild animals or you
need assistance you can call
