If you haven’t visited the
Vernonia Pioneer Museum re
cently, you are in for a pleas
ant experience! With enthusi
astic volunteers rearranging
displays, creating new pro
grams and working on ideas
for ongoing presentations and
demonstrations, the museum
is living up to its mission state
ment of “Preserving the past
for the future.”
There will be a “Museum
Talk” on Sunday, July 17 at
2:00 p.m. featuring Gordon and
Mary Ann Johns Cline sharing
history and stories of their an
cestors dating back to the
1880’s.
New brochures on museums
of the region, including Vernon
ia’s, have just arrived and are
available without charge.
A reading room/library is be
ing set up, and a gift shop fea
turing crafts from the past that
you won’t find anywhere else,
will be coming soon.
The Vernonia Pioneer Muse
um is open Friday, Saturday
and Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00
p.m. If you have ideas to share,
want to have the museum open
at a special time, or need infor
mation, leave a message at
503-429-3713 or by e-mail
<VPMA@agalis.net>.

with the sector of Vernonians
that think laws and requests to
desist are not meant for them.
The Vernonia Senior Center
is not a dumping ground for
your broken or half-broken,
non-functioning or functioning,
household items that you no
longer want around your home.
There is a City Ordinance #4-
8.5.10 that covers illegal dump
ing of any type by any person
on public or private property
NOT registered as a legal
dump site.
Furthermore, the Senior
Center has always requested
you bring your unwanted cloth
ing, etc. that is acceptable into
the Center during business
hours 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Monday through Friday, or call
and make arrangements for lat
er delivery. Not in the dark of
night nor the wee hours of
morning by just leaving them in
front of the sign that states:
PLEASE - no TV’s, computers,
VCRs, microwaves, etc. as we
have no way to dispose of
them. Just because it does not
say organs, springs, mattress
es, baby beds, davenports or
other furniture does not give
anyone the right to treat the Se
niors or anyone else in such a
brazen attitude.
There is a dump and recla
mation station in town. Call City
Hall or Mr. DeWeber for infor
mation on location and hours.
And know this - every time you
think you’ve put one over be
cause you didn’t get caught,
you cost the Senior Center $s -
to have your garbage taken off
their property. Are you really
that cheap? That small?
Oh, by the way a misprint
the last paper - I said the
geese were RESTING at the
lake, not NESTING. There has
never been nesting geese at
the lake that anyone knows of.
Enjoy the weather, it’s all we
have to keep us guessing -
What next?

Summer is here and youth
activities are going strong in
Columbia County. Twenty-five
young adults completed four
days of skill-building, team
building, and leadership train
ing recently with MTC Works
and the National Guard.
The youth focused on appli
cations, interviews and com
pleting the Q Customer Service
Training during the first two
days of the workshop. Comple
tion of the Q Training earned
the students college credit from
Chemeketa Community Col
lege.
MSgt. John Shirron and Sgt.
Bobbie Vicory of the National
Guard Drug Prevention Team
provided two days of team
building and leadership activi
ties. Participants were involved
in hands-on leadership-building
activities, learning skills that will
help them make better choices
in life.
They also interviewed for
work experiences with private
businesses and public agen
cies throughout the county.
Those who were selected will
spend the summer learning
new skills while providing a
public service at several work
sites.
