River Fest Special Edition, April 23, 2005
The Lions Club of Ver-
nonia is raising monies
for the Scouting groups
and for the Skate Park
project. We give you the
chance to win a prize
while making a donation
to the cause. “We
Serve” is our motto. The
Lions will be serving hot
dogs and sausage with
sauerkraut.
The River Fest brings
our community together
to celebrate our parks,
natural beauty, and
great history. It gives vis-
itors the opportunity to
see or town. It gives our
non-profits a chance to
raise monies and a
chance for our business
owners to experience
greater foot traffic.
This year we are sell-
ing rubber ducks for the
River Fest Rubber Duck
Race. Help the Scouts
and the Lions, as we
continue to serve the
community, by buying a
$5.00 or $25.00 duck.

On behalf of Cub
Scout Pack 201, we
would all like to send a
big THANK YOU to the
community & surround-
ing areas that pur-
chased ducks from us
for the Duck Race at
River Fest 2005. Also,
thank you to Triple S
Saw Shop & Vernonia
Mercantile for their con-
tribution
of
sales.
Thanks to the business-
es around town that let
us advertise with fliers.
We had a great deal of
support & plan to use
our proceeds for 2 of our
summer
activities.
These are our cross-
over campout in June &
our Safe Swim program
in August. We plan to do
this fundraiser again
next year, so watch for
information in 2006.
Thank you also to the
local businesses that al-
lowed our Cub Scouts to
set up & sell on your
premises.

In June 2004 a Ven-
turing Crew 201 was
formed. Venturing is a
youth development pro-
gram of the Boy Scouts
of America for young
men and women who
are 17 (and have com-
pleted the eighth grade)
through 20 years of
age. The purpose of
Venturing is to provide
positive experiences to
help young people ma-
ture and to prepare
them to become re-
sponsible and caring
adults.
There teens started to
help clean up between
Vernonia and around
the Jewell area. The
Venturing scouts have
cleaned up the road go-
ing out towards Mist,
straightened up Lee
Wooden Park in Jewell,
helped out at the Senior
Center, planted trees for
the forestry service,
raised over 3,600 decks
of playing cards for the
Adopt-A-Soldier pro-
gram and several other
projects. They also go
on various outing such
as hiking, caving, bowl-
ing, hockey games, etc.
Meeting take place
every 1st and 3rd
Thursday of the month
at 5:30 p.m. in the ban-
quet room of the Buck-
horn. The leaders are;
Greig Bevans (Advisor),
Brian Landry (Associate
advisor) and Becky Ab-
ney (Committee Chair,
along with several other
adults.
The games during
Jamboree and the
Salmon Festival were
planned and worked on
by the Venturing Crew.
They were a success.
Venturing Crew is plan-
ning to run the games
for River Rest, too.
If interested in joining,
please call 503-429-
2122 and ask for Greig
or Sandy.
