School boards, education districts get most candidate attention

Jewell School District
Four candidates have filed
for two positions. Incumbent
Teri Greenwood, who was ap­
pointed to the board, will face
Carolyn Eady for Position 2.
Ann Samuelson and Bonnie
Uerling are seeking Position 4,
which was vacated by David
Samuelson.
Northwest Regional
Education Service
District
N orthwest Regional ESD
serves school districts in Wash­
ington, Columbia, Clatsop and
Tillam ook Counties. Board
m em bers are nom inated by
zone, but elected at large.
Nick Gelbard of Pacific City
is challenging Harry E. Hewitt
of Tillamook for Zone 1.
There are also two candi­
dates for Zone 7 - Henry Kane
of Beaverton and Kenda Shoe­
maker of Portland.
Zone 3 and Zone 5 candi­
dates, Sally Bunnell of Port­
land, and Larry M. Spier of Alo­
ha, respectively, are unop­
posed.
Vernonia Rural Fire
Protection District
Position 1 incumbent Frank
Cieloha, who was appointed to
a vacant seat, and Position 5
incumbent Steve Weller are un­
opposed for new terms.
Mist-Birkenfeld Rural
Fire Protection District
There are no opponents
challenging incumbents Bill De-
Jager in Position 3, Trish
Wright in Position 4 and Troy
Horton in Position 5.
Banks Fire District
Mathew Pihl has filed for Po­
sition 1, currently held by Joe
Evers, who did not seek re-
election. Position 3 incumbent
Steve Harr is also unopposed.
Elsie-Vinemaple Rural
Fire Protection District
Three candidates have filed
for four positions - W illiam
Stevens for Position 2, Fred
Wildgrube for Position 3, and
John llg for Position 5.
No one filed for Position 4.
Portland Community
College District
Washington County and part
of Columbia County are in the
PCC district, with candidates
nominated by zone and elected
at large.
Three candidates are seek­
ing the open Zone 4 position -
Jim Harper, George Hendrix
and Richard F. Lamountain.
Zone 5 incumbent Doreen
Margolin is being challenged by
David C. Squire.
Clatsop Community
College District
Jewell and Elsie voters’ bal­
lots will include candidates for
CCC. Nominated by zone and
elected at large, all of the in-
cumbents are unopposed.
Zone 2, Position 2, candidate
is Karen M. Mellin. Zone 2, Posi­
tion 3 is Frank H. Satterwhite
Zone 3, Position 5 is Rose­
mary Baker-Monaghan, and
Doug Grant for Zone 3, Position 7.

Health District

Norman Stutznegger in Posi­

Hazardous Waste
facility being built
A full service household
hazardous waste collection fa­
cility is being built as part of the
new Columbia County Transfer
Station facility, now under con­
struction in St. Helens. The
new facility is expected to open
in mid-October. The house­
hold hazardous waste collec­
tion portion will be open the
last Saturday of each month.
Satellite collection events in
Vernonia and Clatskanie are
also being considered but a
guaranteed funding source has
not yet been identified for
these events.
