The INDEPENDENT, October 7, 2004 From page 18 standing committee to review graduation. Extra duty contracts Funderburg clarified that classified staff are not permit- ted to coach, under the terms of their contract, because of hourly overtime pay rules. In an unusual move, Tim Titus requested that ten extra duty contracts be voted on indi- vidually. All were approved unanimously, with the excep- tion of Dana Hyde as junior class advisor which Titus opposed. The following extra duty contracts were awarded: MS head football coach Steve Schorzman, MS asst. football coach Leonard McKenzie, HS mentor teacher James Brook- ins, WGS mentor teacher Lynn Shaw, senior class advisor Kathi Fetch, sophomore class advisor Beth Kinz, freshman class advisor Randy Schockey and concessions advisor Ronda Lennon. Page 19 Did You Know… By Chief Matthew Workman Vernonia Police Department When I started as Police Chief in May this year I was amazed by the number of kids that were wearing helmets and safety equipment while riding their bicycles, skateboards, and scooters. The compliance with the state statute and the city ordinance was very refreshing. Since that time I have noticed a decline in hel- met use and an increase in the number of bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and in-line skates riding on the sidewalks. I know the increase in traffic on the sidewalks corresponded to the construction on Hwy 47 in the downtown area so enforcement was tempered until the con- struction ended. Now that the construction has ended we need to revisit the statutes and ordinances as well as increase compliance with the laws. ORS 814.485 and 814.600 says anyone under 16 years old must wear protective headgear when rid- ing bicycles, scooters, skate- boards, in-line skates, etc. Vernonia City Ordinance 745, Sections 27, 28 and 31 state that no bicycles, roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, bicycles, etc. should be operat- ed on sidewalks adjacent to Bridge Street between Weed and California, Madison Ave. between Bridge and Maple, and Jefferson Ave. between Bridge and Maple. This ordi- nance is directly related to the high amount of pedestrian traf- fic going to and from business- es and the higher possibility of accident and injuries to both riders and pedestrians. Parents, kids, and drivers need to be aware of the pres- ence of bicycle and skateboard traffic and be willing to share the limited road space. A bicy- cle lane would be great but is L unlikely, due to the width of Bridge St. in the downtown area. Hopefully soon the skate- board park will be a reality and Vernonia will have a safe place for kids to ride. eonetti’s Pizza & Grill Starting Oct. 18th.
