Obituary
JOHN JOSEPH BROWN
John Joseph Brown, 74, Portland,
died July 17, 2004. A celebration of life
will be held September 4 at 1:00 p.m. at
North Clackamas Park.
Mr. Brown was born April 24, 1930.
He graduated from Vernonia High
School in 1950 and married Bobbie
Cochran later that year. He worked as a
custodian for the Portland School Dis-
trict until his retirement. He was a mem-
ber of the Columbian-Aires barbershop
group for many years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons,
Mike of Oregon City and Mark of Port-
land; two daughters, Colleen Estlick of
Vancouver and Chris Lane of Mil-
waukie; one brother, Pastor Dan of
Canby; three sisters, Barbara Hanon of
Federal Way, Wash., Joanne Michael
of Salem, Nancy Foley of Yakima,
Wash.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-
grandchildren.
SHIRLEY SUE CUTRIGHT
Shirley Sue Cutright, 64, Mist, died
August 2, 2004. A celebration of life will
be held Monday, August 9, at 1:00 p.m.
in the Mist School gym, with Pastor
John Cahill officiating.
Mrs. Cutright was born November
30, 1939, in Truth or Consequences,
New Mexico, to James and Annabelle
Jackson. She attended school in
Banks.
In 1961, she married Amos Dennis
Cutright. They made their home in
Coos Bay until moving to Mist in 1974.
She was preceded in death by a sis-
ter, Joyce Miller.
Survivors include her husband; two
sons, Jeff C. of McMinnville and Shane
of Vernonia; four daughters, Connie
Cutright of Coos Bay, Patricia McLean
of Banks, Teresa Lee and Jackie
Cutright, both of Vernonia; three broth-
ers, Ralph Craft and James Jackson,
both of Banks, Billie Jackson of La-
Grande; four sisters, Ann Hurst of
Washington, Yvonne Wise of Alaska,
Jackie Becker of Texas, Sandra Gam-
roth of Manning; 17 grandchildren.

Mist-Birkenfeld Rural Fire Protection
District.

RICHARD LEE GOODMAN
Richard Lee Goodman, 74, Vernon-
ia, died July 30, 2004. Graveside serv-
ices were held August 3 at Vernonia
Memorial Cemetery, with Pastor Grant
Williams officiating.
Mr. Goodman was born December
16, 1929, in St. Helens, to John
James and Bessie May (Overby)
Goodman. He was raised at Camp 8,
near Vernonia.
In 1948, he married Marie Phyllis
Normand. They made their home in
Vernonia until 1955, when they moved
to Prospect. They moved back to Ver-
nonia in 1962, to Nenana, Alaska, in
1972 and returned to Vernonia in 1976.
He worked at the Oregon American
Lumber Mill and the Mist Shake and
Ridge Cedar Mill. While in Alaska, he
worked as a logger and on the pipeline.
He was preceded in death by his
wife; one daughter, Eve Marie Good-
man; a granddaughter, DeAnn Mae
Goodman; a grandson, Todd Joseph;
and a brother, Eugene Goodman.
Survivors include one son, Paul C.
“Skip” of Vernonia, a daughter, Fawnda
L. Jackson of Culver; a brother, Elmer
“Ben” of Vernonia; three grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; nieces and
nephews.

LAROY HERMAN HEPLER
LaRoy Herman Hepler, 80, Vernon-
ia, died July 29, 2004. A memorial mass
was celebrated August 5 at the St.
Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev.
Ronald C. Millican, celebrant.
Mr. Hepler was born December 28,
1923, in Brooks, to Glen LaRoy and
Emma Gertrude (Schultz) Hepler. He
grew up in Molalla, and served in the
U.S. Army during World War II.
In 1950, he married Genevieve
“Ginette” Albizzati. They made their
home in Molalla until moving to Vernon-
ia in 1964. He worked as a Cat opera-
tor and foreman for Crown Zellerbach
until retiring in 1982.
He was preceded in death by two
brothers, Donald and Dale.
Survivors include his wife; two sons;
a daughter; eight grandchildren; one
great-grandchild.

HOMER “GERALD” KINNEY
Homer “Gerald” Kinney, 82, Vernon-
ia, died July 31, 2004. Graveside Ser-
vices were held August 3 at Vernonia
Memorial Cemetery, with Pastor Pat
Sipperly, of the Lighthouse Christian
Fellowship, officiating.
Mr. Kinney was born February 19,
1922, in Fullerton, California, to William
Francis and Agnes (Nulph) Kinney. In
1931, the family moved to Corvallis,
where he was educated. He served in
the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Rachel F. Ashcraft. They
made their home in Hilllsboro until mov-
ing to Vernonia in 1972. He was an au-
tomotive mechanic and retired from
Starbuck Camper Company in Cor-
nelius in 1980.
He was preceded in death by three
brothers, Richard LeRoy Kinney, Ken-
neth Leonard Wyatt and Dennis Elbert
Wyatt.

Archard of LaPine, Patricia Marsh of St.

ROBERT DANIEL MALARKEY
Robert Daniel Malarkey, 77, Ver-
nonia, died July 18, 2004. A funeral
service was held July 23 at Willamette
National Cemetery.
Mr. Malarkey was born October 19,
1926, in Astoria. He graduated from
Jewell High School and earned a de-
gree in Business Administration from
the University of Portland in 1951, after
serving in the U.S. Navy during World
War II. He was a lumber salesman.
He was preceded in death by one
son, Gerald; two daughters, Diane and
Shannon; and a brother, John.
Survivors include two sons, Dan,
Jr., and Charles; one daughter, Kathy
Allen; a brother, Don; a sister, Marilyn
Rumpakis; three grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren.

CLARENCE “PETE” NORRIS
Clarence “Pete” Norris, 68, Port-
land, died July 25, 2004.
Mr. Norris was born September 8,
1935, in Vernonia. He graduated from
Vernonia High School, then served in
the U.S. Army.
In 1958, he married Colleen Walrod.
They made their home in Portland. He
was a real estate agent for Big Meadow
Realty.
He was preceded in death by his
wife.
Survivors include two sons, Michael

LUCILE ELIZABETH PIEREN
Lucile Elizabeth Pieren, 84, Grants
Pass, died July 21, 2004. A gathering
was held in Grants Pass on August 1.
Mrs. Pieren was born May 2, 1920,
in Portland. Her maiden name was
Pedersen. She grew up in Buxton and
moved to Grants Pass in 1952. She
was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Wesley.
Survivors include three daughters,
Nancy Rodine, Dixie Maxey and
Wendy Duden; five grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren.
Southern Oregon Cremation was in
charge of arrangements.
MAX KEVIN WHITE
Max Kevin White, 41, Vernonia,
died July 28, 2004. A memorial service
will be held Sunday, August 8, in Ver-
nonia Christian Church.
Mr. White was born August 23,
1962, in Portland, to Larry E. and Mary
E. White. He graduated from Aloha
High School.
In 1987, he married Carolyn Log-
gins. They moved to Vernonia in 1992.
He was an arborist for West Coast Tree
Care.
Survivors include his wife; father;
mother; one son, T.J.; one daughter,
Natalie; one sister, Susan Arbuckle.
Remembrances are suggested to a
fund for his children through the
church.

GERALD K. WRIGHT
Gerald K. Wright, 70, Beaverton,
died July 31, 2004. A memorial service
will be held Saturday, August 7, at
11:00 a.m. at Hagg Lake.
Mr. Wright was born April 20, 1934,
in Redmond. He was a dairy farmer, a
logger, worked for the Union Pacific
Railroad, and built overhead cranes for
Paulson-Nieson before his retirement.
In 1965, he married Sally Olson.
They made their home in Redmond,
The Dalles, Portland, and in Vernonia
for many years before moving to
Beaverton in 1994.
Survivors include his wife; one son,
Gregory; four daughters, Deborah
Blakeney, Kimberly Wright, Tracy An-
derson and Linell Rush; two brothers,
Gary and Larry; a sister, Lina DeGraf-
fenreid; seven grandchildren, one
great-grandchild.
