Dramatic increase in losses due to wildfires
Time seemed to stand still
as a group of Studebakers
appeared in Vernonia on
Saturday, July 10. Members of
the NW Chapter of the
Studebaker
Drivers
Club
cruised to the Vernonia Pioneer
Museum then lunched at Shay

The threat to life and com-
munities, as well as structural
losses, due to wildfires has
increased dramatically over the
last 10 years cautions Krista K.
Fischer, executive director of
the Insurance Information
Service of Oregon & Idaho
(IISOI). In Oregon, from 1996
to 2003 reported structure fire
loss in areas not protected by
fire departments exceeded $8
million.
“Fire loss is responsible for
35% of all insured homeowner
property claims,” says Fischer.
“That’s why the IISOI encour-
ages you to be active in your
local community wildfire risk
reduction efforts all year long to
help you make sure YOUR
home is wildfire ready.”
With little, if any, cost a
homeowner can:
• Keep needles and leaves
from your home’s roof and rain
gutters. Needles and leaves in
your gutter can ignite easily
and quickly spread fire to your

• Rake and remove flamma-
ble debris such as dead grass,
pine or fir needles from around
your home and out buildings.
• Keep flammable materials
away from wooden decks or
walkways, clean between the
cracks of your walkway. Fire
has been known to slowly burn
the length of a deck or porch to
ignite a home.
• Store firewood at least 30
feet away from your home.
Woodpiles can cause a very
intense fire.
• If you have a wooden fence

wooden fence can act as a wick

All in Oregon share in the
responsibility to lessen the like-
