Swimming hole gets rehabilitation before season starts
If you are chairing an event,
you need to be present to give
an update. If the committee
lacks adequate information, the
event may not be included in
the advertising for the Jam-
boree.

Top left; Vernonian Chris Batalgia, of D&L Industrial Spraying, sandblasted the wading pool.
Bottom left; Batalgia applied a spray-on finish to the wading pool. Top right; city workers pre-
pare to dam up Rock Creek for summer swimming. The old log was determined to be unus-
able. The new log’s donation was arranged by Jerry Keenon and it was delivered by Weller
and Sons. Bottom right; the summer swimming fun has begun.
Bits & Bites
By Jacqueline Ramsay
I will
start with
a big Bite
or two,
maybe
three.
Yes, I
am
a
grouch
and
a
killjoy, but parents – where are
your kids, now that school is
out?
Three little gents at noon on
a Friday with not much to do
came to the lake for fun. Each
grabbed a Poo Bag, they had
no dog with them. Finally, two
of them threw down the bags
and took off across the dirt
piles. The third pulled a plastic
for sale sign from under his
shirt and swished it around, de-
cided to leave and started off
until I yelled at him this was not
the city dump – “take your trash
with you.” He did, but thinking I
couldn’t see him he threw the
bag down. I picked up two
clean bags and in going back to
my car found the third one –
Shadow will use them, I’m sure.
Please know the park folks pay
for those bags, trying to keep a
clean, sanitary place for folks to
enjoy the lake. Kids, how you
act today is the adult you will
become. Think about it.
Something else was brought
to my attention this past two
weeks that I consider a big No,
No – young children 6 to 10
years old should not be at the
swimming pool area (not yet in
place) nor the lake unsuper-
vised. Playing in the water (riv-
er or lake) a child lost footing in
the running water, when asked
where is someone with you –
answer “Mom’s home.” Lily
pads and cattail roots can tan-
gle you up, too.
Bite #3 – Oh, fishingperson
– Shadow and I wish to thank
you for tossing all that line,
sinker and hook in the tall grass
at table #2, parking lot side. It’s
a good thing the hook caught in
the hair of his foot while both
front feet got tangled in the line
as she bounded onto the grass.
You are so considerate of the
privilege the folks of Vernonia
have given you – a place to en-
joy the fishing. Oh yes – thanks
for the beer can, if it was also
yours.
Now for a Bit. If you want to
see some Catty truck handling,
you should go to the lake, sit on
a bench and watch the fellows
that haul the dirt, etc. from the
roadway dumping the truck and
pup-trailers. They back in,
dump the pup, somehow park
him along side, back in, dump
the truck – punch a button or
whatever, pull away and the
pup just follows along. Good
job fellows. I appreciate what
you are doing.
Father’s Day is gone, July
fourth is coming. Then comes
the County Fair, Old Timers pic-
nic, Senior Center picnic Au-
gust 27, Salmon Festival, Ver-
nonia Days, Labor Day (maybe
not in this order, but then sum-
mer is gone). Did you have a
busy summer or what?
An answer to a prayer –
Agent with pick up, muscle and
a helper came to my rescue. All
I furnished was the yard trash
and the pitchfork. They said,
when I had more give them a
call. Thank you very much. I
even had a second offer of
help. Thank you also, I’ll keep
you in my green book.
Oh, by the way, there are
about 9,000 taste buds on your
tongue.
