Governor attends groundbreaking for Hare’s Canyon State Park

State, county and city offi-
cials and employees, construc-
tion workers, parks supporters
and area neighbors attended
the official groundbreaking for
Hare’s Canyon State Park last
Friday, at the Hwy. 47 entrance
to the park. This is Oregon’s
first new full-service park in
over 30 years.
Developments planned for
the park include campsites,
shower/restrooms, trails, day-
use areas, an observation tow-
er, a trailhead on the Banks-
Vernonia State Trail, yurts, a
horse camp and interpretive
exhibits. Located on 1,755 hilly
and forested acres east of Hwy.
47 and north of Hwy 26 near
Buxton, the park is scheduled
to open in 2007.
Oregon Parks & Recreation
Director Michael Carrier spoke
briefly before turning the micro-
phone over to Gov. Ted Kulon-
goski, praising the efforts of lo-
cal parks supporters Hollie and
Alice Pihl, as well as Oregon
Youth Corps members.
Gov. Kulongoski spoke of his
plan to start one new park a
year for ten years, as a re-
sponse to Oregon voters’ ap-
proval of lottery funds for park
development and maintenance.
