Vernonian wins division spelling bee,
goes now to Oregon State Fair, Sept. 4
Celia Gendron-Herndon, a
student at Washington Grade
School in Vernonia, will repre-
sent Columbia County in the
28th annual Oregon Spelling
Contest, September 4 at the
Oregon State Fair.
The WGS student qualified
for the state competition by
placing first at the county level
in Division II (Grades 6-8).
Other first place winners are
Alec Hendrickson, from Otto
Peterson Elementary in Scap-
poose, in Division 1 (Grades K-
5); and Kim Stites, from St. He-
lens High School, in Division III
(Grades 9-12).
The Columbia County com-
petition was held May 19 at the
Clatskanie School District Of-
fice, with Dave Cook, a retired
teacher, saying the words for
the students to write. An oral
spelling bee is not part of this
program. Linda Lewis and
Karen Roldan scored the stu-
dent’s work.
Other winners and contest-
ants were:
Division I; 2nd Place to Tier-
ra Harris-Mitchell of Lincoln
Grade School in Vernonia and
3rd Place to Edie Webster of
Clatskanie Elementary. The
other contestants were; Mariah
Hill of Scappoose; Trevor Har-
vey of Clatskanie; Alexi Bern-
hardy and Craig Pedersen,
both of Rainier; Kira Paragon of
Grumpy’s Towing

and Damon McNeil, both of
Vernonia; Cole Grisham of St.
Helens.
The Oregon Department of
Education and the Oregon As-
sociation of Education Service
Districts sponsor the contest,
and Northwest Regional ESD,
coordinated the Columbia
County contest.
