are not road-wise. Over the
years I have noticed that deer
are killed in very specific spots
on Hyw 47 so, if you have no-
ticed deer in these spots,
please slow down and give the
deer and yourself a chance.
Is the world going to the
birds? It seems so around my
house! Over a month ago I no-
ticed a hollow thumping sound
in the morning hours. I looked
out the window and could not
find the source. One day I was
out in my shop and again heard
the noise so I walked around
the house tracing the sound.
Soon, I noticed a bird clinging
to the side of a birdhouse
nailed on a noble fir in the front
yard. The bird was good sized
and periodically pounded his
bill into the side of the bird-
house, causing a hollow sound
that traveled a good distance.
At first I thought the bird was a
northern flicker, but the coloring
wasn’t quite right.
A couple weeks later I heard
a radio program about wood-
peckers that like to use down-
spouts as a sounding board.
There was mention that sap-
suckers, a relative of the wood-
pecker, do the same thing.
Question answered! A sap-
sucker was using the birdhouse
as a drum to attract a mate.
The drumming continued for
over a month and I was con-
cerned the poor bird was out of
luck but, finally, Miss Right
must have come along.
About the time the romantic
drumming stopped, my wife
started talking about a crazy
bird hitting the windows of our
house. At first I thought she
was talking about an incidental
window strike, but soon I ob-
served the crazy bird. A varied
thrush, a bird about two-thirds
the size of a robin was squawk-
ing and hitting the windows on
one corner of our house. The
little rascal was really raising
cane. You would think he’d hurt
himself, hitting the window so
hard. I expect that springtime
urges have him showing off to a
potential mate. He made anoth-
er attack while I was typing this
and I’m wondering if it’s safe to
go outside. Remember the
movie “The Birds”!
