A pri- vate graveside service was held April 1 followed by a memorial service at Lake- wood Memorial Park in Hughson, Calif. Mr. Calhoun was born May 19, 1915, in Allendale, Missouri, where he was raised and educated. He served in the U.S. Marines during WWII. In 1939, he married Annabelle. They made their home in Minneapolis, Minn., Chula Vista, Calif., Stockton and Ripon, Calif. He worked in sales man- agement. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include two sons, David of Stockton, Calif., and Steven of Ver- nonia; three daughters, Georgia Robertson of Acampo, Calif., Deborah Jacroux of Carmen, Calif., Cindy Wilbur of Ripon, Calif.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. MILDRED N. ELLIS Mildred N. Ellis, 79, Banks, died March 26, 2004. Ms. Ellis was born December 30, 1924, in Lawton, Oklahoma, to Claud and May (Brantley) Ellis. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 17, at Mist Cemetery, Hwy 47, at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Mullins of the Birkenfeld Community Church officiat- ing. Everyone is invited to the Natal Grange Hall at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Laubach was born December 23, 1925, in Denver, Colorado, to Arthur Clinton and Mary A. (Dowling) Laubach I. He was raised and educat- ed in Rosemead, California. At 12 years of age, he ran away to join the cavalry and was assigned to guard the Mexican border, but was sent home af- ter his mother found him. He served in the U.S. Marines during WWII. In the 50s, he was a partner in a logging company and directed loggers in the Brazilian rain forest. At various times he also owned a prune orchard in Canyonville, owned and operated a mining claim, owned a tavern in North Plains, and was a partner in a car deal- ership in Beaverton. In 1973, he married Dorothy M. Hyde. They made their home in Mist. “The Man from Mist,” as he was known, was a lobbyist in Salem, served on the Board of Directors of WOEC, and was chair of the Mist-Birkenfeld RFPD for 12 years. Survivors include his wife; a son, Arthur III of Fresno, Calif.; two daugh- ters, Mary Corder of Fenton, Michigan, and Kate M. Conley of Mist; two step children, Beverly N. Smith of Salem, and Bill Hansen of Banks; 15 grandchil- dren; several great-grandchildren. Mr. McDonald was born February 6, 1922, in Brookings, to George and Iris McDonald. He was raised in Vernonia and graduated from Vernonia High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. In 1952, he married Stella Fry. They made their home in Bay City, then in 1957 moved to a dairy farm on the Mi- ami River and, later, to Beaver. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Kamna-McDonald; one brother, Ralph; one sister, June McRae. Survivors include his wife, a son, Mel of Bay City; three daughters, Jan- ice Welch of Bay City, Julie Pieren of Beaver, June of Los Angeles, Calif.; Two brothers, Lynn of Independence, Lyle of Hillsboro; two sisters, Joanne Hall of Hillsboro, Dorothy Simonsen of King City; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was raised in Mist, attending school in Vernonia until he was 16, then moved to Seattle, where he completed his education. During WWII, he served in the Mer- chant Marine and U.S. Navy. In 1947, he married Beth Naomi Crowther. He was preceded in death by a son; Jeffrey. MILLER Birdene A. Miller, 88, Forest Grove, died March 29, 2004. Funeral services were held April 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, with Rev. Bruce A. Rumsch officiating. Interment was at Willamette National Cemetery. Mrs. Miller was born October 4, 1915, in Bennett, Nebraska, to William E. and Anna (Gaskel) Maahs. She was raised and educated in Neb. In 1940 , she married Paul R. Miller. They made their home in Neb., then moved to California in 1959 and to Banks in 1975. They moved to Forest Grove in 1992. She worked as a hairdresser and helped her husband run their custom meat cutting business in Neb. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Marlyce Kae Mil- ler; a son, Bill; five brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Shar- rie D.
