Obituary
JAMES RICHARD CARSON, SR.
James Richard Carson, Sr., 89,
Clatskanie, died March 12, 2004. A
gathering of family and friends was
held March 21.
Mr. Carson was born March 23,
1914, in Clatskanie, to John Albert and
Marja (Warren) Karvonen. He was
raised and educated in Clatskanie.
In 1940, he married Virginia G. Har-
ris. They made their home in Clatska-
nie. He worked in construction as a
steamfitter.
He was preceded in death by his
wife and one daughter, Susan.
Survivors include three sons,
James R. Jr. of Clatskanie, Michael of
Craig, Alaska, Daniel of Portland; a
daughter, Peggy White of Timber;
brother, Larry Karvonen of Carmichael,
Calif.; sister, Lucille Burke of Gold
Beach; nine grandchildren; eight great-
grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

CHRIS COLLINS
Chris Collins, 47, Vernonia, died
March 21, 2004. A Celebration of Life
was held March 27 at Anderson Park,
with Pastor John J. Cahill, of the Ver-
nonia Baptist Church, officiating.
Mr. Collins was born October 25,
1956, in Portland, to Wilbert and Joy
(McClaflin) Collins. He was raised in
Toledo until moving to Vernonia at the
age of 13. He graduated from Vernonia
High School in 1974, and attended
Oregon State University.
Over twenty-three years ago, he
married Rosie. They made their home
in Albany and Corvallis until moving to
Vernonia in 1987. He worked in the
auto parts industry until retiring due to
ill health in 2000.
He was preceded in death by a sis-
ter, Cathy.
Survivors include his wife; three
sons, Brian of Hillsboro, John and
Kevin, both of Vernonia; a daughter,
Candy of Vernonia; sister, Jeannie Sel-
lion of St. Helens; nieces and nephews.

RILEY EDWARD DeLAP
Riley Edward DeLap, 90, died
March 14, 2004. A memorial service
was held March 24 at Sweetbrier Inn in
Tualatin. Interment was at Riverview
Cemetery.
Mr. DeLap was born March 24,
1913, in Boise, Idaho. He graduated
from Pacific Coast Banking School in
Seattle.
In 1937, he married Ferriel. He
worked in banking in Pendleton, Nyssa
LaGrande, The Dalles, Merrill, Albany,
and Portland.
He was preceded in death by a son,
Larry.
Survivors include his wife; a daugh-
ter, Sally Grunkemeier of Banks; sister,
Norma Ostrom of Florence; two grand-
children; four great-grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Guest Housing Center at Provi-
dence St. Vincent Medical Center.
PAT EBERLY
Pat Eberly, 73, Eugene, died March
24, 2004. A funeral mass was held
March 31 in St. Mary Catholic Church
in Eugene. Recitation of the rosary was
March 30 in Eugene.
Mr. Eberly was born May 7, 1930, in
Banks. He graduated from Banks High
School and was a logger for 40 years.
In 1952, he married Martha Jansen.
They moved to Veneta in 1957.
Survivors include his wife; a daugh-
ter, Diane Sconce; a son, David; broth-
er, Ronnie; nine grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to a
memorial fund in his name for supplies
and equipment for Veneta Elementary
School at Key Bank in Veneta.

BARBARA ALEXANDRIA HOLMAN
Barbara Alexandria Holman, 82,
Timber, died March 12, 2004. No serv-
ices were held.
Mrs. Holman was born March 27.
1921, in Boston, Mass., to Thomas and
Helen (King) Wright. She was raised
and educated in Mass.
In 1959, she married Bruce Hol-
man. They made their home in Virginia,
then California, before moving to Ore-
gon in 1963. They lived in Portland,
Tigard and Tualatin, then moved to
Timber in 1967. She worked at Forest
Grove Community Hospital until retiring
in 1988.
She was preceded in death by her
husband and two sisters, Beatrice and
Helen.
Survivors include a son, Al Mackie
of Forest Grove; five daughters, Bar-
bara Kirk of Azle, Texas, Christine
Mackie of Bremerton, Wash., Doris
Bushor of Portland, Linda McMillan-
Walsh of Beaverton, Diane Haworth of
Timber; sister, Doris Hoffman of Exeter,
N.H., brothers, John Quinn of Boston,
and Thomas Quinn of Mesa, Ariz.; 11
grandchildren; three great-grandchil-
dren; nieces and nephews.
Westside Cremation was in charge
of arrangements.
ALPHONS RICHARD “DICK” MELIS
Alphons Richard “Dick” Melis, 88,
Sublimity, died March 17, 2004. Inter-
ment was at the Mist Cemetery.
Mr. Melis was a native of Mist. He
attended Vernonia High School and
graduated from Oregon State Universi-
ty in 1938. He worked as an agrono-
mist.
In 1939, he married Arvella Kubin.
They made their home in California,
Tunisia, Nevada and Woodburn, then
moved to Sublimity in 1996.
He was preceded in death by his
wife.
Survivors include a son, Al of Hous-
ton, Texas; a daughter, Shirley
Nagelschmidt of Reston, Virginia; two
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

JANET G. “PENNY” MICHENER
Janet Gail “Penny” Michener, 68,
Vernonia, died March 20, 2004. A me-
morial service was held March 25 at the
Scout Cabin.
Mrs. Michener was born May 28,
1935, in Devils Lake, N. Dakota to By-
ron Johnson. She was raised in N. Dak.
She moved to Oregon in 1966 and re-
ceived a master’s degree in Special
Education from Portland State Univer-
sity.
She taught special education in the
Vernonia School District from 1985 un-
til her retirement in 1998. In 1994, she
married Lynn Michener. They made
their home in Vernonia.
Survivors include her husband;
three sons, James McMahon of
Vernonia, Murray McMahon of
Portland, and Mike McMahon of
Battleground, Wash.; sisters Jody
Ahifors of Toledo, Ohio, Sandy
Buchanan of Raleigh, N.C.; seven
grandchildren; three great-grand-
children.

JANE L. PACE
Jane L. Pace, 91, Portland, died
March 14, 2004. A memorial service
was held March 21 at First Christian
Church in Portland.
Mrs. Pace was born June 11, 1912,
in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She moved
to Portland in 1921. She graduated
from Oregon College of Education and
Western Washington State College.
In 1941, she married Wesley K.
Pace. They lived in Portland and Ver-
nonia, then returned to Portland in
1958. She was a teacher in Vernonia
and Portland.
Survivors include her husband; son
Marvin; daughter Shirley Mitchell; sister
Marion Roemhildt; three grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to a
charity of choice.

IDA M. STAHL
Ida M. Stahl, 87, Hillsboro, died
March 14, 2004. A funeral service was
held March 20 at Skyline Memorial
Gardens and Funeral Home.
Mrs. Stahl was born October 15,
1916, in Calgary, Canada, to Lawrence
and Mary Lee Boyd. She was raised in
Portland, Walla Walla, and Kalispell,
Mont. She graduated from high school
in Montana.
In 1934, she married John Stahl.
The made their home in Cut Bank,
Montana, and Payette, Idaho, before
coming to Oregon in 1949. She worked
as an assistant caseworker for Adult
and Family Services, retiring in 1978.
She was preceded in death by her
husband; sister Louise Ray; daughter

Jerry Alan Wilson, 39, Vernonia,

Mr. Wilson was born February 6,
1965, in Portland. He was raised and
educated in Portland and Vancouver.
In 2002, he married Kristina Ford.
They made their home in Bend. He was
a disc jockey, internet entrepreneur and
horse trainer.
Survivors include his wife; two sons,
Christopher and Nicholas, both of
Beaverton; a step-daughter, Casey
Davis of Redmond; brother Michael of
Vancouver; sister Raileen Oelke of
Portland; one nephew.

MYRNA MARIETTA SIEBERT
Myrna Marietta Siebert, 73, Aloha,
died March 12, 2004. A service was
held March 18 at Beaverton Christian
Church followed by committal at Valley
Memorial Park Cemetery in Hillsboro.
Mrs. Siebert was born January 5,
1931, on a farm near Ionia, Kansas, to
Glenn and Constance (Russell) Mariet-
ta. She graduated from high school in
1948 in Mankato, Kansas, and earned
a teaching certificate at Kansas Wes-
leyan University.
In 1949, she married William
Siebert. They made their home in Burr
Oak, Kansas, until moving to Aloha in
1961. She worked as a teacher in
Kansas and as a cook and cafeteria
manager for Beaverton School DIstrict
until her retirement in 1989.
Survivors include her husband; four
sons, Bill, Jr. of Mist, Michael and Dou-
glas, both of Cornelius, Stephen N. of
Aloha; five grandchildren, two great-
grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
St. Vincent Hospital or the Diabetes As-
