Don’t Stop This Press
Most of our readers are fa-
miliar with the people who
write, take photographs, help
with ads or perform the other
jobs needed to provide your
community newspaper. How-
ever, there is one group of peo-
ple you never see…those who
prepare the paper for the
press, operate the press, then
bundle and tie the newspapers
for us to deliver. So, here are a
few of those hard-working peo-
ple at The Daily Astorian,
where The INDEPENDENT is
printed.
Letters
Thank you, wonderful
citizens of Vernonia
To the Editor:
Congratulations Vernonia
citizens! You donated one hun-
dred percent of the turkeys and
hams for this year’s Christmas
boxes prepared by Vernonia
Cares. This was a tremendous
help due to the increased need
the organization is facing. In
the past few years, the need
has doubled, then doubled
again, according to Vernonia
Cares director Sandy Welch.
Citizens came forward with
turkeys, hams, turkey breasts
and monetary donations to
make it all come together. In
addition to cash donations, citi-
zens donated over 3000 Saver
Shields at Vernonia Sentry. In
friendly competition, the volun-
teer fire department and fire
board donated the most
turkeys among the organiza-
tions participating in the
“Turkey Round-up” challenge.
The savings in meat products
allowed the organization’s fund
to stretch beyond the holiday
season. Once again, the citi-
zens of Vernonia have shown
what a community is all about.
Thank you!
Thank you to the Cedar
Ridge Sports Camp, the Ver-
nonia Sentry, the Walters fami-
ly and the Denckla-Rohm fami-
ly for providing freezer storage
space. The early donation effort
would not have been possible
without the ability to store the
donations adequately. Thank
you!
Thank you to Randy Parrow
and Errold Burch at Vernonia
Sentry for accepting and stor-
ing check-stand donations, as
well as facilitating the Saver
Shield redemption and turkey
order, allowing Vernonia Cares
to purchase turkeys at a great
savings. Thank you!
As we begin a new year with
an increased demand on Ver-
nonia Cares resources, here
are a few ideas to keep in mind.
Very few hygiene products are
ever available to the clients at
Vernonia Cares. Especially
needed are bar soap, deodor-
ant, toothpaste, toilet paper,
shampoo and feminine hygiene
products, to name a few. Also,
when planting your garden this
year, please remember that
Vernonia Cares is very happy
to accept overflow produce –
yes, zucchini, too!
Wishing you a wonderful
new year, with gratitude, and
until next year,

North Street Players
appreciate audiences
To the Editor:
Thank you. Thank
you,
thank you!!! To all of you who
came to The North Street Play-
ers first production, “A Christ-
mas Carol.”
I modestly must concede it a
success in no small part, to the
dedication of the wonderful
Players themselves and the
professionalism of our director,
George Ray, and his helpers.
I’m looking forward to future
theatrical productions and your
continued patronage.
If you are interested in par-
ticipating in any way, shape, or
form, please call me at 503-
429-8425.
Thanks again,
Sally Harrison
