The INDEPENDENT, January 2, 2004 Recall of Mayor Orlowski is goal of petitioners The recall of Banks Mayor Robert Orlowski is the object of petitions being passed by a group calling itself “Citizens of Banks for a More Informed Community.” According to the Petition for Recall filed by Becky Gosselin, the chief petitioner, Orlowski is responsible for inadequate communication with the citi- zens of Banks, resulting in in- sufficient votes to maintain the police department levy. The petition further claims that major decisions are made without citizen input, that citi- zens “are not encouraged to at- tend City Council meetings” and when they do, are not al- lowed to speak. The petitioners must submit petitions with 68 valid signa- tures to bring a recall election to the voters. The deadline for the signatures is January 22 and, as of Dec. 30, Gosselin said they had obtained about 60 signatures. In addition to Becky Gos- selin, Ed Gosselin is listed as a director of Citizens of Banks for a More Informed Community. The show will be open Monday, January 5, and continue through January 20. Chambers began painting with acrylics 35 years ago. He said acrylics provide him with a variety of advantages and a degree of control while still al- lowing for “lucky accidents’ when he paints spontaneously. Although his painting are abstract, Chambers said he believes they represent his awe and reverence for the nat- ural world. The Kathrin Cawein Gallery is located on the Pacific Uni- versity campus in Forest Grove. The hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. Page 11 Scholarships for students interested in public affairs Pacific University is offering several scholarships of up to $2,000 for students who show a special interest in public af- fairs. The McCall Scholarships are supported in part by pro- ceeds from Pacific’s Tom Mc- Call Forum, which draws na- tional political figures each year to Portland for a debate be- tween a liberal and conserva- tive of national prominence. In the Service Matthew M. Tardio Army Pvt. Matthew M. Tar- dio has arrived for duty at Fort Myer, Arlington, Va., for a three-year assignment with the 3rd Infantry, traditionally known as “The Old Guard,” it is the oldest active infantry unit in the Army. Soldiers in The Old Guard serve as the Army’s official cer- emonial Honor Guard and es- cort to the President at the White House. As an infantry unit, it maintains tactical and technical proficiency as well as providing security for key na- tional leaders in times of emer- gency or national disturbance. The unit soldiers are responsi- ble for the conduct of military ceremonies at the Pentagon, national ceremonies and else- where in the nation’s capital. They maintain a 24-hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns, provide military escorts at Ar- lington National Cemetery, and participate in parades at Fort Myer and Fort McNair, Wash- ington, D.C. A further distinction of The Old Guard is the time-honored custom of passing in review with bayonets fixed at all pa- rades, a distinction that today is still reserved only for The Old Guard. Tardio, an infantryman, is the son of JoAnn M. Strickland in Banks. He is a 2002 gradu- ate of Banks High School. The New Year is the season in which custom seems more par- ticularly to authorize civil and harmless lies, under the name of compliments. People recipro- cally profess wishes which they seldom form and concern which they seldom feel. — Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773) “At Pacific, we are proud of our long tradition of educating successful and productive citi- zens who build community through public affairs,” said Bob Van Dyk, associate profes- sor of political science. “The McCall Scholarships reflect our commitment to leaving behind more than we take.” Those interested in a McCall Scholarship must apply for, and be admitted to, Pacific Univer- sity no later than February 1, 2004. They must also submit a two-page, double-spaced es- say that describes their involve- ment in and/or study of public affairs and future plans. In addition, applicants are strongly encouraged to attend the Pacific University Paceset- ters Scholarship Competition, held on February 15, 2004 and on March 1, 2004. This compe- tition provides an opportunity for talented students to work with Pacific faculty and to demonstrate their academic abilities.
