The INDEPENDENT, December 18, 2003 Mist “Share the Spirit of the Season” Listen…can you hear the rain? Can you smell the snow? Can you see the wind? As we approach the solstice, and the mind-numbing pace of the holiday season, our yards and gardens, and the forests sur- rounding us offer respite. We are blessed with wonderful clean air to fill our lungs and our lives. Even in town the air is clean under the fragrant smell of woodsmoke. Take the time to step outside, close your eyes and see if you can tell what kind of rain is falling. What is the rain falling on? In one of those rare sunny moments, feel the warmth of the winter sun. Here in the maritime northwest, we enter the darkest time of the year, the sun hidden and the clouds pressing close to the earth, filling the aquifer. I could give you a list of stuff to do, but that’s less important than using our environment to bring ourselves peace and whole- ness. The shortest day of the year approaches. Light will be re- turning after 2:05 a.m. EST (5:05 a.m.) on the twenty-second day of December. Now is the time to consider the successes and fail- ures of long summer days past and envision the promise of next summer’s bounty. BREATHE…pray for peace for yourself, your family, your com- munity and the world. It is the beginning of Decem- ber, a nip is in the air, and Christmas is around the corner. Many of us are busy with tradi- tional holiday tasks, and getting into the “spirit of the season.” With our country just coming out of a recession, and unem- ployment still higher than nor- mal, there are families in our community that may not be busy with the shopping and decorating that accompany this season. After taking care of the day-to-day expenses, many families just may not be able to afford gifts for the children or a big turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
