Vernonia Police Department
Officer Cathy Baity has at-
tended the Career Officer De-
velopment course at the Ore-
gon Police Academy. The
C.O.D. course is for officers
who have been out of Oregon
police work for more than two
years or who come from out of
state. Those of you who know
Cathy can probably imagine
what her classmates have
been kidding her about. Even
though she was Dakota born,
her years in the southern U.S.
had an audible impact upon
her speech. The other officers
are quite happy about her re-
turn as they have been cover-
ing her duties while she attend-
ed classes.
Headlights are a good thing,
usually! As many of us know
from experience, the improper-
ly aimed headlight can be
frightful, especially when we
are traveling a wet, dark high-
way in the Nehalem Valley
area. Please be a courteous
and legal driver and make sure
the headlights are aimed as re-
quired. Officers can issue cita-
tions for defective equipment.
The Truck Light Parade
went off without a hitch. Al-
though the turnout was smaller
than anticipated, the quality of
the entrants and the prepara-
tion were obvious. Parade vol-
unteers, police, and fire per-
sonnel were able to create a
safe environment for entrants
and observers. Hope to see
you next year.
It seems like getting your
4X4 muddy is quite the thing to
do around the valley. Please, if
you are going to do this, stay
off private or public property
you don’t have permission to
be on. Recently police found a
4X4 stuck near public works on
Lincoln Avenue. Beside getting
your name in the newspaper
you may end up seeing a judge
about it.
Volunteers are working their
tails off. Since July, the depart-
ment has been developing a
volunteer program for clerical
support to the police officers.
Over 780 hours of volunteer
time has been worked. This is
equivalent to nearly half a year
of full time work. Without our
volunteers, the report that goes
to the newspapers, our state
crime reporting, and many oth-
er administrative tasks could
not get done. The current vol-
unteers are Lisa Edgar, Pat
Stipe, Floyd Ragner, Catalina
Aguilar, and Candy Cahill.
Thanks so much for your dedi-
cation to our community safety.
Lock your doors. Many of us
are complacent about locking
our doors. Locking them during
the day is a good idea, as well
as at night time. Daylight bur-
glaries are more commonplace
in Oregon than many people
think.
