Can You Dig It…
By Schann Nelson
Wow! What a change since last month!
We went from hot, almost summer-like
days to a very cold freeze for several days.
Now we are having what seems like more
typical fall windy, stormy, rainy weather.
The Austrian field peas I threw out in the
garden beds in Septem-
ber have started to
grow. By spring they
will be a solid mass of green vines that could
be chopped up and tilled in. I’m too lazy for
that, so I just kind of roll it up and use it for
mulch.
I hope you all have your garlic in. I don’t
have my garlic in yet, also apparently to the
aforementioned laziness. The other alternative
is, as my Dad says, Old Timers Disease and I don’t want to con-
sider that. I actually did just kind of forget to plant the stuff. I’m
having trouble deciding where to put it. I’d like to plant a little
more, since my sale of garlic braids at Jamboree went pretty well
for a first effort.
I actually got ripe peppers in my garden this year. Of the three
varieties I planted, the Golden Bell actually produced full sized
lovely yellow peppers late in September. If I can get a ripe pepper
off this variety, nearly anyone should be able to, since my garden
is so shady. The other pepper that would probably be successful
for most people was Autopick, a mild jalepeño type that all gets
ripe at once. Unfortuately, in my case, I didn’t realize they were all
nearly ripe (they were hiding in the foliage) until after the freeze.
For the first time this year we got to make cider from apples off
our own trees. It was great to be able to eat apples for a month
and still be able to make cider from the apples we couldn’t
eat fresh. If you’ve never had truly fresh cider, don’t miss an
opportunity to taste it. Fresh cider is totally
unlike the stuff you buy in stores, even
when it’s labeled cider, not juice. The closest
you can get is in organic food stores in season.
I’ve applied for the Master Gardener program
this year. I’ve been wanting to do this for many, many
years and I’m seizing my chance. Hopefully, you will
see more scientifically-based stuff in this column as a
result. Anybody out there want to car pool? Sign up
now and call me. See related article on this page.
Stuff to do now (beside staying warm and dry):
• Rake and destroy leaves from diseased fruit trees.
• Plant, or move, landscape trees and shrubs.
• Trim chrysanthemums to 4-6 inches after blooming.
• Clean and oil tools for winter storage.
• Force bulbs for indoor blooms.
• Apply lime.
• BAIT for slugs, bait for slugs and bait for slugs!.

Master Gardener
class scheduled
Home gardeners in Colum-
bia County with a thirst for
more gardening knowledge,
and a willingness to pass that-
knowledge on to others, can
still join the Oregon State Uni-
versity Extension Service Mas-
ter Gardener program.
The Master Gardener pro-
gram is designed to teach vol-
unteers how to make better
use of their gardening re-
sources and abilities. They, in
turn, teach others. Volunteers
are given training in soil man-
agement, vegetable gardening
techniques, landscape mainte-
nance, pest control, and many
other aspects of gardening.
Then during the gardening
season, these new Master
Gardeners help teach others to
do a better job of growing and
caring for plants, fighting off
pests, and making our commu-
nities a better place to live.
Beginning January 5, class-
es will be held for 11 consecu-
tive Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. in St. Helens. There
is a fee of $45 for reference
materials.
For more information about
the program and about how to
enroll, contact the Columbia
County Extension office, locat-
ed at 505 N Columbia River
Hwy in St. Helens or call 503-
397-3462.
