Many projects to benefit Vernonia Cares Food Bank underway
Vernonia Cares Food Bank
has several projects underway
at this time. The Grade Schools
just completed a class com-
petion food drive and delivered
a record amount of 2,150
pounds of food to Vernonia
Cares on October 31.
The Vernonia Cub Scouts
are spearheading a city-wide
canned food drive which will
culminate with a door-to-door
pick up campaign November 8.
Sacks of food can be left on
home’s front porch for speedy
pick up that day. If your food
was missed in the pick-up,
please call the food bank at 503-
429-1414 and leave a message
and your phone number so a
Food Bank staff person can
arrange to pick up the food.
The food bank will also leave
food donation boxes at Sentry,
Vernonia Hardware, True Value
Hardware, Mini Mart, Vernonia
76, and Creatures Pet Store
through Dec. 15. It is hoped,
beside the regular canned food
donations, that the community
will pitch in holiday food items
towards the Christmas Food
Boxes. “Due to our 30% in
creased client load from this
time last year,” states Sandy
Welch (local food bank direc
tor), “w e’ve set our goal of 200
Christmas food boxes this year.
More people are utilizing the
food bank to offset their grocery
needs during these difficult
economic times. I feel confident
that Vernonians, and others,
will once again share to help lo

Sandy. There is also a “turkey
roundup” underway (see pg. 8).
Vernonia Cares goal is to
provide three days worth of
groceries, once a month, to
needy households in and
around Vernonia. The Christ
mas Holiday Food Box is in ad
dition to the regular ongoing
services. Any questions may be
directed to Sandy Welch by
calling the Food Bank at 503-

are Tuesday and Thursday
from 16 a.m. to 2 p.m. During
other times, a message may be
left on the answering machine.
