At the conclusion of an
other Summ er Reading
program, I once again feel
both relief and regret. The
planning and extra work in
volved is balanced against
the satisfaction of seeing
youngsters and parents
have fun with reading-relat
ed activities and comes up on the short end of
the scale. The attendance at this summer’s pre
sentations averaged 50 at each of the 8 ses
sions. This was due to a large extent to the in
genious activities for the older youngsters that
were planned and executed by Kate Conley and
to the direct involvement of the parents who
helped weekly with their younger children, at the
library. Other merchants, organizations, and indi
viduals who helped make the program a success
include Sentry Market, Farmwoman’s Nursery,
Vernonia Rural Fire Department, Friends of the
Library, City of Vernonia, Fred Meyer, WalMart,
St. Helens Book Shop, Edith Nelson, Orissa
Burghard, Trish Maldonado, Jennifer Scribner,
and Dylan Burch. This list does not include the
dedicated parents who all deserve rewards for
their help. Maybe next year rewards should be
given to the parents as well as the youngsters.
Prizes for reading goals may be claimed through
mid-September, with many good things yet
available from which to choose.
While the focus of activities at the library dur
ing the summer months has been on children, a
presentation that should be of interest to many of
the adults in the community has been scheduled
for September 23, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. This will be
an Oregon Chautauqua program, by retired Air -
Force intelligence officer Rich Francona, entitled
“Japanese Attacks on Oregon in World War II.”
A piece of Oregon history will be brought to life
with this lecture and discussion of a well-planned
........ .... . J
and executed Japanese military operation that
ultimately failed. Since Mr. Francona resides in
Port Orford, he will be spending the night in Ver
nonia, with a night’s lodging being donated by
the Staggenborgs, owners of the Vernonia Inn.
Mark your calendars for this presentation, which
is being made possible by funding from the Ore
gon Council for the Humanities.
The book sale that was held during Jamboree
weekend was a successful money-raising event
with proceeds to benefit the library. This was a
project of The Friends of the Library who would
like to thank everyone who helped with this
event. I would personally like to thank Joann
Glass and her family for all of the extra effort
they put forth prior, during and after the sale.
Recent acquisitions include Under the Banner
of Heaven by Jon Krakauer, Every Fixed Star by
Jane Kirkpatrick, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, The
Kennedy Curse by Edward Klein, Johnny Angel
by Danielle Steel, Kate Remembered by Scott
Berg, Cyanide Wells by Marcia Muller, To the
Nines by Janet Evanovich, Clear and Convincing
Proof by Kate Wilhelm, Naked Empire by Terry
Goodkind, Presumption of Death by Perri
O ’Shaughnessy, Street Dreams by Faye Keller-
man, Ghost Riders by Sharyn McCrumb, Lucia,
Lucia by Adriana Trigiani, and Exit Wounds by J.
A. Jance. Somewhere on this list, there should
be something for just about everyone. If so, won
derful! If not, come in and browse till you find
something that fits your reading, listening, or
viewing desire. (I highly recommend Exit
Wounds. I think it is one of the best of Jance’s
Joanna Brady mysteries.)
