Logger of the year and All-Around Logger for the Vernonia competition
Charles “Hollywood” Gann of Clatskanie, was honored with
the Max Sword Memorial Sportsmanship award for 2002.
Officials of the Jamboree Logging Show select the winner of
the sportsmanship award. Gann accepted the award from
Logging Show Chairman Bill Woolsey.
Jack Sweeney and Lori Barber of Wilcox & Flegel, with Tony Hyde and Bill Woolsey of the
Vernonia Logging Show Committee, display the award earned in 2001 by Scott Whitehead as
All Around Vernonia Logger. Whitehead was fighting fires and was unable to attend the show.
Vernonia show completes Columbia County contests
The Vernonia Jamboree
Logging Show is the fourth and
final show of Columbia County
competition. In addition to the
awards earned in the local
show, the Columbia County
“Logger of the Year” is deter
mined by points accumulated in
the shows at Clatskanie,
Rainier, St. Helens and
Vernonia.
Logging show contestants
will be tested on their accuracy,
speed and agility in the various

contests of the Jamboree
Logging show on Sunday,
August 1, at 12:00 noon in
Hawkins Park. Most of the par
ticipants are professional log
gers.
Events include bucking with
working saws 4-5 cu. and 5-6
cu., unlimited saws, women’s
bucking, pole falling, steeple
chase , pole walk and snip and
choker setting.
Trophies are awarded at the
conclusion of each event.
Kids participate in the
Logging Show as well, in the
kid’s choker setting event, and
their own ax throw competition.
After a hot competition, the
participants try the water
events: pole walk, boom stick
run and burling, all on (and
sometimes in) Rock Creek.
Veteran field announcer
Pete Peters will be assisted by
booth announcer Bill Woolsey.
Registration will be from
10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Caulk
boots are required and contest
