    DALE F. VIRDEN
Dale F. Virden, 62, Banks, died May
5, 2003. A Celebration of Life service
was held May 10 at Dayspring Christ­
ian Fellowship Church in Banks. Per
his wishes, his ashes were scattered
over his and his son’s favorite hunting
grounds.
Mr. Virden was born July 19, 1940,
in Follansbee, W. Va. He served in the
U.S. Air Force four years.
In 1969, he married Cheryl A.
Westrick. They lived in California, Aloha
and Banks.
He worked at Deluxe Check Print­
ers for 27 years and was an agricultur­
al technician for Jewett-Cameron Seed
for seven years.
Survivors include his wife; a son,
Dale C.; a daughter, Darcy R. Tooke;

Autumn Funeral Home in Tigard
was in charge of cremation arrange­
ments.
Salem; his mother, Zelda Fash of Rich­
land; three brothers, Rick of Salem,
Loren and Chuck, both of Rainier,
Wash.; and a sister, Judith Francis of
Baker City.
Young's Funeral Home of Tigard
was in charge of arrangements.
SAMUEL L. LAZOTT
Samuel Lee Lazott, 52, Salem, died
May 9, 2003. Funeral services were
May 14 at Young’s Funeral Home in
Tigard.
Mr. Lazott was born February 27,
1951, in Portland. He grew up in Man­
ning and Buxton and graduated from
Banks High School in 1970.
In 1972, he married Delores Vande-
hey. They lived in the Manning area un­
til moving to Richland in 1981. They
have lived in the Salem area since
1993.
He worked as a tree taller for Tim­
ber Inc.
Survivors include his wife; a son,
Steven of Salem; a daughter, Andrea of
WILLIAM A. “POPCORN” CONNEL­
LY
William Armond “Popcorn” Connel­
ly, 52, Birkenfeld, died May 18, 2003. A
graveside service was held May 24.
Mr. Connelly was bom March 11,
1951, in Aberdeen, Wash., to William
Theodore and Evelyn Mae Wachholtz
Connelly. He grew up in Washougal
and graduated from Washougal High
School in 1969.
In 1978, he married Shirley M. Bish­
op.
He was a saw filer and worked for
Olympic Forest Products for the past
27 years.
Mr. Connelly was preceded in death
by his mother in 1988 and a sister,
Juanita Tabor in 2002.
Survivors include his wife; a son,
Bryan Phelps of Colorado; four daugh­
ters, Christina Austin and Lisa Green-
wait, both of Clatskanie, Carie of West-
port, and Jessica of Birkenfeld; his fa­
ther, William T. of Westport; a sister,
Karen Brewer of Kelso, Wash.; five
brothers, David of Warrenton, Walter of
Westport, Joseph of Longview, Wash.,
James of Tacoma, and William H. of
Kelso, Wash.; eight grandchildren.

JACK R. ADAMS
Jack Raymond Adams, 82, Sweet
Home, died May 17. 2003. Funeral
services were May 22 in the Sweet
Home Nazarene Church, with Pastor
Gene Penrod, officiating.
Mr. Adams was born April 13, 1921,
in Kiefer, Oklahoma, to Alva and Pearl
Groves Adams. He grew up in Vernon­
ia.
In 1941, he married Christine
Forbes McKenzie. They lived in Sweet
Home.
He and his brothers started Hobin
Logging Company. In 1944, he entered
the U.S. Navy and served as a gunnery
crewman on a merchant ship in the Pa­
cific during World War II.
After returning from the Navy, he
worked with Hobin Logging and the lo­
cal trucking industry. He had his own
company, Adams Trucking, until retire­
ment.
He was a life member of Sweet
Home Elks Lodge #1972 and VFW
Post #3437. He was a founder and
benefactor of the Lebanon Community
Hospital.
Mr. Adams was preceded in death
by a son, Jack Raymond Jr. in 1965;
five brothers, Archie, Louis, Paul, Gloyd
and Vern; and a sister, Reba Hobin.
Survivors include a son, Scott of
Sweet Home; a daughter, Linda Holley
of Sweet Home; three grandchildren; a
brother, Bob of McMinnville.
The Workman & Steckly Funeral
Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
JUDITH ANN O’NEILL
Judith Ann O’Neill, 66, died May 15,
2003. Recitation of the rosary was on
May 18, in Gateway Little Chapel of the
Chimes. A funeral mass was held May
19 in St. Therese Catholic Church in
Portland.
Mrs. O'Neill was born February 11,
1937, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Her
maiden name was Cameron. She
moved to Vernonia when she was 10
years old and graduated from Vernonia
High School in 1954.
In 1962, she married Don O'Neill.
She graduated from the University of
Oregon and received a master's de­
gree in library science from Portland
State University. She was a librarian
and media specialist for Centennial
High School.
Survivors include her husband; a
son, David; a daughter, Nancy Bratt; a
brother, Donald Cameron; and four
grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
American Diabetes Association.
Gateway Little Chapel of the
Chimes was in charge of arrange­
ments.
LORAN E. “BUD” ATKINS
Loran E. “Bud" Atkins, 82, LaPine,
died May 27, 2003. An inurnment serv­
ice was held May 31 at Vernonia
Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Atkins was bom July 14, 1920,
in Birkenfeld, to Earl and Marie Sim­
mons Atkins. He graduated from Ver­
nonia High School He served in the
U.S. Army during World War II. He
worked as a buyer for Crown Zeller-
bach and was also a Columbia County
Deputy Sheriff. He served on the Ver­
nonia City Council and was elected
mayor of Vernonia for several terms in
the 1960s.
In 1987, he married Bonita Nelson.
He was preceded in death by a sis­
ter.
Survivors include his wife; two sons,
Earl of Hillsboro, and Charles of South­
ern California; two daughters, Marie
Tillman and Joyce Watson both of
Reno, Nevada; three stepchildren; sev­
en grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchil-
dren; and four great-grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
Newberry Hospice, 51681 Huntington
Road, La Pine, OR 97739.
Central Pines Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
