S tate P olice plan safety belt drive
The Oregon State Police St.
Helens Office will participate in
the 3 Flags Safety Belt Blitz,
May 19 through June 1. During
the Blitz, members of the St.
Helens office will be emphasiz
ing safety belt compliance by
watching closely for violations
and taking enforcement action.
Federal overtime funds for
safety belt enforcement will be
used for saturation patrols dur
ing the Blitz period.
Recent Nationwide Crash
Data determined that the use of
driver restraints is the strongest
predictor of child restraint use.
When a driver is buckled, re
straint use for children (birth to
15) is 87 percent. When a driv
er is unbuckled, restraint use
for children is 24 percent. Motor
vehicle crashes are the leading
cause of death for children
ages 4 to 14, and more than
Vernonia Police Department
half of children who die in
crashes are unbelted.
The driver of a motor vehicle
is responsible for ensuring that
all passengers under the age of
16 years are properly secured
with a child safety system,
safety belt or safety harness.
Children under four years of
age and weighing 40 pounds or
less must be secured with a
child safety system. Children
between four and six years of
age weighing between 40 and
60 pounds must be properly se
cured with a child safety sys
tem that elevates the child so
that the safety belt or harness
fits properly. Children over six
years of age and weighing 60
pounds or more must be prop
erly secured with a safety belt
or safety harness.
