Program on “I’m tired of the recession
I’m Tired of the Reces-
sion....can we Please Start the
Recovery? will be presented May
7 in Vernonia and St. Helens.
This is a must-attend pro
gram for anyone interested in
working toward solutions to
Oregon’s economic situation.
The Vernonia session will be
from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the
Scout Cabin in Hawkins Park,
901 Park Drive. A morning ses-
sion will be held from 9:30 to
11:30 a.m. at Columbia Tech-
nology Center, 375 S 18th
Street in St. Helens.
Topics will include Oregon’s
Economy, past, present and
projections; Oregon Labor and
Industry Trends, Oregon Em-
ployer Survey Results, and Co-
lumbia County Labor and De-
mographic Trends.
Graham Slater, Administra-
tor for Workforce and Econom-
ic Research, Oregon Employ
ment Department, will lead the
presentation. Born, raised and
educated in England, Slater
moved to the United States in
1981, after graduating from the
University of Manchester with a
degree in Mathematics and
Management Sciences. He has
worked for the Oregon Employ
ment Department for 20 years
and is responsible for about 60
economists and analysts.
Shawna Sykes, a Workforce
Analyst for Columbia, Clatsop
and Tillamook Counties, will
join Graham. She holds a B.A.
degree in Economics from
Lewis & Clark College and for-
merly served as Executive Di-
rector of the St. Helens-Scap-
poose Chamber of Commerce,

seeks volunteers for ivy removal
Vernonia Chamber of Com
merce, which has “adopted” four
miles of the Banks-Vernonia
Linear State Park, recently com
pleted an early spring clean-up
and has scheduled additional
clean-up days of at least once
each calendar quarter.
The next scheduled day is
July 19 but, if enough willing
hands and equipment can be
amassed, some extra days will
be planned specifically to re-
move ivy, which is choking
trees along the trail near the
entrance to town.

helping with this project may

Friesen Lumber Company
has announced its intention to
sell its operating assets to
Stimson Lumber Company of
Portland. The St. Helens
sawmill has been in operation
since 1959 and under the cur
rent ownership since 1979.
Stimson is a family owned
company that was founded in
1850 with operations in Ore
gon, Washington, Idaho and
Montana. It operates mills in
several small towns, including
Clatskanie, Forest Grove and
Tillamook.
The sale is expected to con
clude by the end of June, 2003

Chamber of Commerce Easter Egg Hunt in Hawkins Park.
The event was chaired by Doll y Keenon, with volunteers who
cooked and dyed and hid 40 dozen eggs.
