Obituary
LEE ROY CHRISTENSEN
Lee Roy Christensen, 89, Fall
Creek, died March 3, 2003 Memorial
services were held March 7 at Im
manuel Baptist Church, Springfield.
Mr. Christensen was born January
24, 1914, in Timber, to Harvey and
Marie Braun Christensen. He grew up
in Vernonia, and was a long-time Ver
nonia resident.
In 1939, he married Ruth Pierce.
He was a logger and retired from
Southern Pacific Railroad.
Mr. Christensen was a member of
Immanuel Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his
wife.
Survivors include a son, Jack of
Springfield; two daughters, Mary Lee
Rasmussen and Jessie Hatfield, both
of Fall Creek; a sister, Ethel Blackburn
of Vernonia; five grandchildren; seven
great grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
Immanuel Baptist Church women’s
ministries.

WALTER S. JAROSS
Walter Sebastian Jaross, 86, Forest
Grove, died February 26, 2003. Inter
ment was in Willamette National Ceme
tery, Portland.
Mr. Jaross was born March 12,
1916, in Peru, III., to George M. and
Bernice Kozloski Jaross. He grew up in
Peru.
He served in the Civilian Conserva
tion Corps and the U.S. Army. He was
discharged in 1948 at the rank of ser
geant.
In 1947, he married Ruth E. Frost.
They lived in Forest Grove.
Mr. Jaross earned a bachelor's de
gree in education at Pacific University
and an education and counseling certi
fication through Pacific University and
Portland State University.
He was a teacher and principal in
Timber, Buxton, Manning, Vernonia
and Banks in the 1950s and 1960s. He
was a counselor for the Oregon State
Employment Division for 16 years until
retirement.
Mr. Jaross was preceded in death
by his wife in 1992.
Survivors include two sons, Patrick
of Florence, and Michael of Belling
ham, Wash.; three grandchildren; one
great-grandchild.
Remembrances are suggested to a
non-profit charity of choice serving the
homeless population in the Forest
Grove area.

SHIRLEY A. TURK
Shirley Anne Turk, 69, Forest
Grove, died March 2, 2003. Interment
was private.
Mrs. Turk was born July 1, 1933, in
Banks, to William and Christina Vande-
hey Cop. She grew up in Banks and
graduated from Banks High School in
1951.
She worked at Tektronix in Beaver
ton and Meier and Frank, until retiring
in 1992.
Mrs. Turk was a life-long member of
the Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by two
brothers, Ralph Cop and Vernon Cop;
and two sisters, Lena Vanderzanden
and Gladys Munkres.
Survivors include a son, Thomas of
Clatskanie; three daughters, Cindy
Bonney of Brownsville, Donna Scamp
of Cornelius, and Julie Frantz of Forest
Grove; eight grandchildren; five great
grandchildren; a sister, Rita Vanderzan
den of Forest Grove; nieces and
nephews.

EVELYN M. OVESEN
Evelyn M. Ovesen, 82, died Febru
ary 28, 2003. Graveside services and
committal were at Gethsemani Ceme
tery and a memorial service was held
on March 6, at Calvary Lutheran
Church in Portland.
Mrs. Ovesen was bom May 22,
1920, in Mist, to Fred and Minnie Parki-
nen. She grew up in Mist and graduat
ed from Vernonia High School in 1938.
She moved to Portland and attend
ed beauty school.
In 1941, she married Stanley
Ovesen.
She was preceded in death by her
husband in 1996, and a brother, Billy.
Survivors include two daughters,
Sandra O'Connor, and Malia Owens;
four grandchildren; one great-grand
child.

Marilyn Ann Mahoney Cubic, 47,
Buxton, died February 18, 2003. A cel
ebration of life was held March 8 at As
cension Church in Portland.
Mrs. Cubic was bom July 15, 1955,

Grammar School and graduated from
Marycrest High School.
In 1974, she married J. Eric Cubic.
They lived in Buxton. They owned and
operated Custom Equipment Repair in
Cornelius.
Survivors include her husband; two
sons, Jason and Christopher; her
mother, Helen J. Mahoney; three sis
ters, Betty Chareles, Cathy Grimm and
Pat Ballantine; and a brother, Dennis
Mahoney.
FLORENCE Q. FLAIG
Florence Gertrude Flaig, 93, Forest
Grove, died March 7, 2003. A funeral
mass was held March 11 at St. Antho
ny's Catholic Church in Forest Grove,
with the Rev. William Holtzinger, cele
brant. Burial rites and interment were in
St. Francis Cemetery in Roy.
Mrs. Flaig was born July 24, 1909,
in Sentinel Butte, N.D., to Peter and
Anna Reiter Lardy. She grew up in the
Twin Butte area. In 1937, she moved to
Hayward, California.
In 1937, she married Otto Flaig.
They lived in Hayward and moved to

Lyda of Hillsboro; two sisters,

Arlene Marjorie Hahn, 91, Banks,
died March 4, 2003. Funeral services
were held March 10 at Donelson,
Sewell & Mathews Mortuary in Hills
boro. Interment was at Valley Memorial
Park in Hillsboro.
Mrs. Hahn was born January 23,
1912, in Heisen, Washington, to Arlen
and Lillie Brock. In 1920, they moved to
Hillsboro. She graduated from Hillsboro
High School in 1930.
In 1933, she married William Ver
non Hahn. They lived in Banks. She
was a clerk at Montgomery Ward in the
1950s.
She was a member of the Rebekah
Lodge, active in the Odd Fellows
Lodge, held state offices including
President of Association Ladies Auxil
iary Patriarch Militant of Oregon, 1965-
66; and Grand Matriarch Grand Ladies
Encampment Auxiliary of Oregon,
1974-75. She was a member of the
Sunset Promenaders and charter
member of the Hillsboro Hoedown
Square Dance Club.
Mrs. Hahn was preceded in death
by her husband in 1997.
Survivors include a son, Gary of
Banks; a daughter, Shirley Wayne of
Banks; five grandchildren; many great
grandchildren.

ALFREDA BOOGAARD
Alfreda Laura “Freda" Boogaard,
88, Verboort, died March 8, 2003. A fu
neral mass was held March 13, at Visi
tation Catholic Church in Verboort, with
the Rev. Joseph Heuberger, celebrant.
Interment was in Visitation Cemetery.
Mrs. Boogaard was bom August 22,
1914, on a farm in Wilmont, Noble
County, Minn., to August and Mary Van-
denberghe DeClerck. In 1920, they
moved to Butler, Minn. In 1934, she
and her sister, Alice, moved to Palmyra,
N Y. She worked as a housekeeper and
for a doctor.
She returned to Butler in 1935 and
married Cornelius L. Boogaard. They
lived on her parents' farm and later, on
their own farm. They moved to Verboort
in 1952.
She was a member of the Catholic
Church and active with the Altar Soci
ety and choir. She was a 50 year mem
