Applications are now being
accepted by USDA-Natural Re
sources Conservation Service
for the Environmental Quality
Incentives Program (EQIP).
The application deadline for
2003 funding has been set at
January 31, 2003.
EQIP is a voluntary conser
vation program for promoting
agricultural production and en
vironmental quality as compati
ble goals. Through EQIP, agri
cultural producers may receive
financial and technical assis
tance for installing conserva
tion practices that address nat
ural resource concerns on the
land they own or operate.
EQIP can also assist produc
ers in complying with state and
national regulations by address
ing natural resource concerns
about water quality, soil quality,
wildlife habitat or others.
Eligible land for EQIP may
include cropland, pastureland
and non-industrial forestland
that is part of an agricultural op
eration.
If an applicant is eligible and
funding is made available,
NRCS will write contracts rang
ing from two to ten years, de
pending on time needed to car
ry our practice installation and
management. Typical conser
vation issues that have been
addressed with EQIP in Colum
bia County include providing
manure storage that reduces
nutrient runoff, nutrient man
agement on cropland and pas
ture, pasture management im
provements with practices like
cross fencing, water develop
ments and rotational grazing,
stream bank protection with
practices such as tree planting
and bank stabilization meas
ures, wildlife habitat practices
and others.
For more information, con
tact the local Soil and Water
Conservation
District
and
USDA-NRCS office in Colum
bia County at 2514 Sykes
Road, St. Helens, or call 503-

Washington
County, SWCD-NRCS is locat
ed at 1080 SW Baseline, Hills
boro, phone 503-648-3014.
