Obituary
MICHAEL P. FARRELL
Michael P. Farrell, 57, Vemonia,
died December 25, 2002. A Celebration
of Life will be held January 4, 2003 at
10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints in Vernonia,
with Lee Knowlton, Branch President,
conducting. Private family interment will
be at the Willamette National Cemetery
in Portland.
Mr. Farrell was born February 25,
1945, at Kelly Field AFB in Texas, to
Walt and Patricia Brennan Farrell. He
grew up throughout California and
graduated from La Mirada High School.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from
1965 to 1969 and was discharged at
the rank of Sergeant.
In 1967, he married Christina
Welch. They lived in California. They
later divorced.
In 1979, he married Linda Lafley.
They lived in Vancouver, Wash. They
later divorced.
He moved to Tacoma, Wash, and, in
1998, to Vernonia.
Mr. Farrell worked as a fireman, for
Chevron, and for Clark County in Van
couver, as a Custody Officer. He was a
bail bondsman and private investigator.
He recently received his Paralegal De
gree.
Survivors include a daughter, Kelli
Martinez of Vernonia, two sisters,
Aileen Berry of Eureka, Calif., and De-
bie Foster of Green River, Wyoming,
one grandchild; nieces and nephews.

WILLIAM G. RHOADES
William George Rhoades, 67, the
Phillipines. died December 14, 2002. A
mass was held December 23 at St.
Matthew’s Catholic Church in Hillsboro.
Interment was near his home on the Is
land of Luzon in the Philippines.
Mr. Rhoades was born December
13, 1935, in Conway, Ark. He grew up
in Los Angeles, Calif, and moved to
Vemonia in 1969. In 1980, he moved to
Reno, Nevada, and later lived in the
Philippines.
In 1954, he married Billy Wayne
Whiteside and in 1997, he married
Nina.
Mr. Rhoades worked various jobs
and, while living in Vemonia, was own
er and publisher of the Vemonia News
Weekly. He was also a police officer
and a foreman at both Diamond and
Huggy Bear cabinet companies.
He served in the Air National Guard
in the 1950s.
Mr. Rhoades was preceded in death
by his wife, Billy Wayne, in 1996.
Survivors include his wife, Nina; two
sons, William C., Robert James; one
daughter, Sally Gene Mattingly; seven
grandchildren; one great-grandchild;
three brothers, Jim, Gene and Russell.

Methodist Church in St. Helens. En
tombment was at Lincoln Memorial
Park in Portland.
Mrs. McMichael was born April 4,
1903, in Detroit, Mich., to Erie and Mil
dred Colter Conant. In 1908, they
moved to Portland. She attended Lents
Elementary School, graduated from
Northfield, Minn., High School, attend
ed Normal School, then taught school
in Benedict, N. Dak. for one year. In
1926, she graduated from Mounds
Park Midway School of Nursing.
In 1927, she married Paul S. Paul
son; they moved to Chicago, III, then
moved to Rainier in 1933 and operated
the Rainier Review. In 1935, they
moved to St. Helens and started Paul
son Printing, then started The St. He
lens Chronicle in 1935. During the de
pression, she returned to nursing until
retirement. She was an industrial nurse
at Pope & Talbot, did private duty and
was a Community Health Nurse prior to
retirement.
In 1987, she married M.E. McMi
chael.
She was preceded in death by her
husbands, Paul Paulson in 1981 and
M.E. McMichael in 1988; a daughter,
Paula Lou; and a son, Paul Spencer Jr.
Survivors include a son, Robert
(Pete) Paulson of St. Helens; two
daughters, Margaret Gaddis and
Jeanne Sherer, both of St. Helens; 13
grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren;
and one great-great-grandchild.

Nursing Home in St. Helens.

DARYL E. GRAHAM
Daryl E. Graham, 49, Forest Grove,
died December 28, 2002. A Celebration
of Life will be held January 6, 2003, at
1:00 p.m. in Schlegel Hall at Sunset
Park in Banks, with Pastor Grant
Williams, of Vernonia Community
Church, officiating. Interment will be at
Buxton Cemetery.
Mr. Graham was born March 28,
1953, in Moberly, Missouri, to D. Earl
and Betty Byrd Graham. He grew up in
Macon, Mo., and moved to Banks. He
graduated from Banks High School in
1971.
In 1972, he married Barbara Bus-
cay They lived in Vemonia and later,
Gaston. They later divorced.
In 1978, he married Daryl Mari
Owen. They lived in Gaston. They later
divorced.
Mr. Graham was a marble and gran
ite mason for Infinity Stone Corporation
in Portland.
He was preceded in death by his
parents.
Survivors include four sons, Daryl
W. of Boston, Mass., Brandon B. of
Forest Grove, Brogan D. of Hillsboro,
Kolton O. of Vemonia; two daughters,
Wayland H., and Kendall S., both of
Vernonia; seven brothers, D. Earl Jr. of
San Francisco, Calif,, John H. of Port
land, Clarence A. of Macon, Missouri,
Duane D. of Manassas, Virginia, David
L. and Donald L „ both of Sweet Home,
and Nils M. of St. Louis, Missouri; a sis
ter, Donna D. Gwinn of Colgate, Okla.,
one grandchild; nieces and nephews.

MAXINE M. LEAVITT
Maxine Marie Weholt Leavitt, 77,
Banks, died December 12, 2002.
Memorial services were held Decem
ber 22 at Hillsboro Presbyterian
Church. Interment was in Willamette
National Cemetery in Portland.
Mrs. Leavitt was bom October 29,
1925, in Kellogg, Idaho. She grew up
and graduated from high school in
Lewiston, Idaho.
In 1946, she married Edward Leav
itt. They lived in Seattle, Wash., from
1950 to 1960 and Des Moines, Wash.,
until 1999, when they moved to Banks.
Mrs. Leavitt worked at Boeing in the
early 1950s, and later as a Head Start
teacher in White Center, Wash.
She was a charter member of Mar
cus Whitman Presbyterian Church in
Des Moines, where she taught pre
school and was a deacon. She was a
Camp Fire leader in the mid-1960s.
Survivors include her husband; a
son, Chris of Puyallup, Wash.; a daugh
ter, Julie Ackelson of Banks; five grand
children; four brothers, Carl and
Richard Weholt, both of Grangeville,
Idaho, Raymond Weholt of Tucson, Ari
zona, and Lonnie Weholt of Seattle.

Joy S. Vandervelden, 88, Forest
Grove, died December 13, 2002. A fu
neral mass was held Dec. 19 at St. An
thony’s Catholic Church, with the Rev.
William Holtzinger, celebrant, assisted
by Lani Vandehey, pastoral associate.
Vault interment was in Mountain View
Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Vandervelden was born March
24, 1914, in Portland, to John L.S. and
Louise R. Reppey Snead. She attend
ed Portland schools and, after gradua
tion, traveled to Europe with her moth
er before entering the University of
Oregon,
In 1937, she married Edmond
Burke Tongue, Jr.
In 1984, she married Joe Van
dervelden. They moved to Forest
Grove. She later married Robert Ham
mond.
Mrs. Vandervelden was a member
of the Junior League, a Cub Scout Den
mother, a member of the Portland Hunt
Club and PTA president.
She bred Standard Poodles under
the name Acadia Kennels and was ac
tive in the Poodle Club of America.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Joe Vandervelden in 1994, a
son, Anthony Burke Tongue, and a
brother, J.L.S. (Jack) Snead, Jr.
Survivors include her husband,
Robert Hammond; a daughter, Patricia
Gosselin of Laurel; one grandchild; two
great-grandchildren.

GEORGE A. MOORE
George Allen Moore, 85, Banks,
died December 12, 2002. At his re
quest, no funeral was held.
In 1938, he graduated from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
with a degree in architecture. In 1942,
he married Patricia Cartwright.
Mr. Moore was president of George
A. Moore and Associates. He was ap
pointed by Governor Tom McCall to the
Workman’s Compensation Board from
19Z2 through 1978. He was twice pres
ident of the Oregon Chapter of the As
sociated General Contractors and a
member of the national board during
the late 1960s and 1970s.
He was a member of the Old Scotch
Church in Hillsboro.
In 1994, he married Thelma Aird.
He was preceded in death by his
wife, Patricia, in 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma;
a sister, Mavis Leyrer of Seattle, Wash.,
two sons, Peter and Geofrey; six
grandchildren; three stepchildren, John
Aird, Scott Aird and Susan Wiggins; 12
step-grandchildren.

JOAN CIELOHA
Joan Cieloha, 57, Gresham, died
December 17, 2002. A gathering was
held December 28 at Central Station
Apartments in Gresham.
Ms. Cieloha was born July 7, 1945,
in Portland and was raised in Timber.
She graduated from Forest Grove High
School in 1962 and owned More to
Love, a clothing store in Hillsboro.
Survivors include a daughter,
Amanda Augustine; two sons, Nick
Streit and Ron Streit Jr.; a brother,
Thomas Cieloha; two grandchildren.
WANITA “JOY” OLSON GALINAT
Wanita “Joy” Olson Galinat, 77,
Sheridan, died December 15, 2002.
Funeral services were held December
21, at Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home
in Hillsboro. Interment was in Fir Lawn
Cemetery in Hillsboro.
Mrs. Galinat was born July 12,
1925, in Portland.
In 1967, she married Robert Gali
nat. They lived in Sheridan.
She was a cathode ray lab techni
cian at Tektronix and retired in 1987.
Mrs. Galinat was a former state offi
cer and member of Pumpkin Ridge
Grange, and a member of the Grande
Ronde Artists Guild.
Survivors include her husband; two
sons, Pat of Seattle, Wash., and Gary
of Pebble Beach, Calif.; six grandchil
dren; two great-grandchildren; a sister,
Donna Klingsporn of Aloha; and a
brother, Byron "Ross” Olson of Banks.

Ann Beth Bostwick, 75, Banks, died
December 18, 2002. Memorial services
were held December 23 at the Forest
Grove Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
day Saints.
Mrs. Bostwick was born September
14, 1927, in Harrisburg, South Dakota,
to Harry and Lucy Bliss Kehm. She
grew up in Sioux Falls, So. Dak. and at
tended All Saints School. She graduat
ed from the University of Illinois in 1950
with a degree in Occupational Therapy.
She worked at Miami Valley Hospi
tal and Good Will Industry in Dayton,
Ohio.

HARRY LAZOTT, JR.
Harry Lazott, Jr., 78, Banks, died
December 25, 2002. A memorial serv
ice was held December 27 at the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints in Forest Grove, with Bishop
Evan Gibson of the Second Ward, con
ducting. Private interment was held at
Buxton Cemetery.
Mr. Lazott was born June 11, 1924,
in Buxton, to Harry L. and Hedwig
Brettschneider Lazott. He grew up in
Buxton and Vernonia and graduated
from Vernonia High School in 1943. He
served in the U.S. Army in World War II
from 1943 to 1945, and was discharged
at the rank of Staff Sergeant.
In 1946, he married Ruth Frakes.
They lived in Banks
He was a member of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Mr. Lazott was preceded in death by
a brother and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife; four
sons, Reginald of Redding, Calif., Bar
ry of Banks; Lonnie of Forest Grove,
and Mathew of Enterprise; a daughter,
Kathleen of Aurora; two brothers, John
of Estacada, and Joe of Montana; two
sisters, Thelma Jessup of Indepen
dence, and Dolly Reichstein of Dayton;
12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchil
dren; nieces and nephews.
