Photographer Rick Schafer
will show slides of photos in his
beautiful new gift book, Oregon
IV, December 1 at 4:00 p.m., in
the Columbia Center Auditori
um in St. Helens.
Not since Oregon III was re
leased, in April 1987, have Ore
gonians had a new state book.
Oregon / Vis a superb work that
continues the photographic tra
dition begun in 1968 with the
book Oregon. Published by
Graphic Arts Center, this new
volume is the result of five
years of work by Schafer, step
son and protégé of the late Ray
Atkeson.
Schafer’s images convey fa-
m iliar scenes and evocative
places such as the deep, m ys
terious caves of the Siskiyou
Mountains, the perfect clarity of
Crater Lake, the brilliant fields
of wildflowers in the Cascade
Range, and the m ajesty of
Multnomah Falls. From Sea
side to the W allow as, The
Dalles to Klamath Lake, the
splendor of Oregon is captured
in this inspiring book.

at 375 S. 18th Street in St. He
lens. For more information on

Grey Dawn Gallery in Ver
nonia will hold their third annu
al Christmas Party and Winter
Show, on December 6 from
6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The evening
will also be an opportunity for
local people to say farewell to
Christopher and Ruth Burkett.
Chris Burkett has honed his
craft and become a photogra
pher of international renown
during the 20 years they have
lived in Vernonia. Now they
have moved closer to their
church, in the Milwaukie area.
In addition to featuring Bur
kett’s photos, “Abstracts of Na
tu re ,” Dan and H eidi Brow n,
owners of Grey Dawn Gallery,
plan to fill the gallery to capaci
ty with a large and exciting col
lection of C hristopher’s images.
The display will include old fa
vorites, some rarely displayed
images, and others so new that
they have been seen by very
few people.
Those unfamiliar with Bur
kett’s work will find the exhibit
even more exciting than will old
friends and acquaintances. The
O regon native learned the
printing trade in order to under
stand what happens to photos
when they leave the camera.
He has developed his own
techniques while learning from
others and, since 1993, has
produced large form at prints
from his Vernonia facility.
There will be door prizes,
with everyone attending receiv
ing a ticket at the door. Be
cause the evening is also a
benefit for Vernonia Cares,
everyone who brings a dona
tion of food or funds for the
foodbank will receive additional
tickets for the drawings.
Grey Dawn Gallery is locat
ed at the corner of Bridge
Street and Madison Avenue, in
downtown Vernonia.
