Hello -

but
you
should know, we are alive and
active.
July 3 - we held our Honor
to our Veterans. We started
with the Flag Salute, to spite
the California judge’s ruling -
ho, ho - and had a unique way
of giving out doorprizes. We
found three men who had
served in the Army, three in the
navy, one in the Marines, two in
the Air Force, one in the Mer
chant Marines, one in the
Coast Guard and one in the
Seabees. Three of them had
been wounded, and several
served on foreign soils, includ
ing Europe, Wales, Japan and
Iran. No WWI veterans, seven
WWII veterans and four Korean
War veterans.
July 4 - we held the first
money raiser for our intended
new senior center. The auction
was very well attended. Had a
full house with half being win
ning bidders. We raised over
$500. Thank you to everyone.
The kids auction was also well
received and had lively bidding
going on. We will include it in
our next event. #17 was held by
Miss Ostrander. She took Ben
ny Bear home with her for just
being at the auction and regis
tering in.
We are also now halfway
through our “Christmas and
Halloween in July” sale (also a
fundraiser for the new building).
Thanks, again, to all who
donated goods, time and mon
ey through the auction.
Our July business meeting is
July 19 at 1:00 p.m. It is an
open meeting and we are urg
ing any and all interested sen
iors to please attend. There is
much business to be attended
to and decisions to be made.
The nominating committee has
to be set in motion for new offi
cers. The annual senior picnic
is set for August 9 in Anderson
Park.
The 4th of July Parade and
Fireworks were well received.
Many good things were heard
about them. Thanks to Vernon
ia Pride, Vernonia Cares and
lots of hard work by all.
Do you know what your
Golden Oldies have been
doing? Just settin’ around
makin’ happy music. June 28,
they were invited to McMin
nville for a day of fun, eats and
music at the Pelletier resi
dence. June 29, they played for
the Budge family reunion at
Camp Wilkerson, and July 13
they played at the Christopher
son
residence
for
Ron
Durham’s retirement party.
They also play at the senior
center every Wednesday from
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
On July 29, bandleader
Duke Gortler goes in for carpal
tunnel surgery and will be laid
up for at least two weeks. Keep
his doctor in your prayers.
Duke says he doesn’t need
any, he'll get well in spite of the

Thanks, again, to all our new
volunteers in the thrift area and
those who come in to see what
needs to be done and do it.
A large, sloping hillside and foraging deer can make gardening difficult, but Terry and Gail
Fultz took advantage of the situation with an expansive lawn and drifts of Shasta daisies,
accented by deer-resistant foundation plantings. Containers full of blooms on the deck of
their Noakes Road home complete the tranquil setting for the Vernonia Pride Yard of the
Month for July, 2002.
