As we realize the cuts that
are necessary to balance next
year’s school budget we are
very fortunate to have these
funds set aside that can be
spent only on art programs at
our schools. For this we owe a
big thank you to the community.
It certainly will be exciting to
see what programs we will be
able to bring to the schools next
year. Thanks to everyone who
contributed.
Personally, I would like to
give extra thanks to the people
who helped put together an

I find it very difficult to be
lieve that Columbia County is
going to permit septic tanks to
be put in the flood plain below

L. Banks family. The City of
Banks was not incorporated
until 1921 and will not be 100
years old until then. The Banks
Chamber of Commerce has
never said this was the cen-
ntennial for the city. We are as
tounded by the lack of integrity
and the poor judgement from
this group. Our Chamber mem
bers have worked hard and
spent money out of their own
pockets, not to mention the
long hours spent researching
this information. We have invit
ed anyone that has true histori
cal knowledge to share it with
the community and to join us in
our fact finding mission during
this historical event. As to date,
this group has not come forth
with anything to help, but in
stead, seek to hinder our ef
forts. We again invite them to
contact us. Please join our
community in celebrating the
100th anniversary of the Banks
Post Office and the naming of
the surrounding community.
We will be having a centennial
strawberry shortcake sale at
Sunset Park on the 4th of July,
meet the direct descendents of
John L. Banks at the Banks
BBQ, a chili cook-off, time to be
announced, and more.

To the Editor:
Many thanks are due to peo
ple and organizations that have
supported Vernonia Cares
Food Bank during the last few
months. In April, the Vernonia
Lions Club donated $200 to
ward repairing our commercial
freezer. Thanks, Lions! Anyone
wishing to help toward the addi
tional $600 needed to complete
the repair is encouraged to join
in! All gifts are tax deductible.
A second round of thanks
goes to the vendors who par-
tricipated in our Business Expo
on May 11. Participants includ
ed DMZ Tax Service, Bridge
Street Espresso, Vernonia
Community Choir, The Oregon
Dept. of Employment, Larry
and Gail Snethen, MTC Corpo
ration, The Vernonia Chamber
of Commerce, Vernonia Lions
Club, ReMax Realty, Vernonia
Hardware and Ajax Machine.
Thanks, too, to the people who
took the time to attend this
event. We hope you made pos
itive contacts with the busi
nesses represented at the
Expo. Cares plans to make this
an annual event so, vendors,
start planning for next year
(possibly March of 2003).
Thanks, also, to the school dis
trict for the use of the WGS
gym.
A third thank you goes to the
Vernonia Postal Workers who
gathered 839 pounds of food
during their canned food drive
on May 11. Our shelves were
becoming empty of certain
foods and your addition of
canned foods helped to meet
the need. Thank you, especial
ly, to Peter O’Leary, who head
ed up this project. Thanks, too,
Vernonia, for those who donat
ed food for this Postal Workers
Food Drive.
The most recent addition
came to Vernonia Cares
through the Rose City Motorcy
cle Club. They spent several
months gathering canned food
and money during their motor
cycle tour registrations. They
used the money to buy gro
ceries, especially some we
don’t often have donated, and
then loaded them into a van
(provided by Bob Lanphere)
and on their motorcycles. The
Club then brought them out to
Vernonia Cares on June 8. As
you can see from the picture
elsewhere in this paper, they
provided many cases of food.
Special thanks to Den and to
Char for their organization of
this entire project. This family-
oriented club also helps other
organizations throughout the
year. Their many good deeds
are commendable. On behalf of
Vernonia Cares: Thank you!
A special thank you is ex
tended to Sandy Deweber, who
has faithfully served as a volun
teer and treasurer at Vernonia
Cares for over six years. She
recently resigned so she can
spend more time with her fami
ly. Thanks, Sandy. We'll miss
you, but enjoy yourself! You’ve
earned some rest time!
The number of clients con
tinues to increase here at the
Food Bank. In May 2002, we
served 86 households, contain
ing 158 adults and 95 children,
for a total of 253 people. The
need is great; please be as
generous as you can to help
feed the hungry in and around
Vernonia. It takes both food
and funds to keep this Cares
open. Gifts can be sent to Ver
nonia Cares, PO Box 126, Ver
nonia, OR 97064. All donations
are tax deductible.
We also could use volun
teers. Could you spare four
hours a week? Please call 503-

Tips to keep contents of safe deposit box secure
To avoid having contents of
a safe deposit box declared un
claimed, staff at the Trust Prop
erty Section of the Division of
State Lands recommends:
• Be sure your spouse, chil
dren and at least one relative or
close friend know that you have
a safe deposit box and where it
is located.
• Put your Social Security
number and other identification
information in your box along
with names and contact infor
mation for a couple of family
members or friends.
• Set a recurring date every
year to personally inspect the
contents of your safe deposit
box, such as a birthday or an
niversary. Keep a list at home
of box contents, including
names, numbers and other de
tails on stocks, bonds and in
surance policies.
• Check with your financial
institution at least once a year
to be sure your box rent is paid.
Don’t assume that it is being
paid by a pre-authorized debit
from another account.
• Contact the bank or credit
union if the branch where you
rent a box merges with another
financial institution, closes or
relocates.
• Always notify your bank or
credit union when you change
addresses.
If you are in charge of fi
nances for another person,
make sure that you or an au
thorized person takes these
steps for them as well.
