The Fourth of July will soon
be here and community organi
zations are gearing up for an
other great time. Remember,
though, that the com m unity
fireworks display in Vernonia is
made possible only by dona
tions from com m unity m em
bers.
Starting off the fund raising
will be a spaghetti feed at Lew’s
Place on Tuesday, June 25, 5-
8:00 p.m. The cost for adults is
$7; kids 10 and under are $5.
Enjoy some great spaghetti
with friends and family, while
helping a good cause.
If you always wanted to be in
a parade, this is your opportuni
ty! There will be a parade at
7:30 p.m. on the fourth, and
everyone wishing to participate
is welcome. Just be at City Hall
by 7:00 p.m. to register and get
a spot in line.
The fireworks won’t start un
til dusk, at the school grounds,
but tbe Boosters will start serv
ing hamburgers and hot dogs
around 6:00 p.m. Boy Scouts
will be selling cotton candy,
popcorn, etc., and light sticks
will be available from the
Boosters. Bring family, friends
and blankets, and spread out
on the grounds between Wash
ington Grade School and Ver
nonia High School. Do not
bring personal fireworks; they
are prohibited.
“We are so lucky, here in
Vernonia, to have a fireworks
display of our own and not have
to fight traffic and crowds to en
joy firew orks,” said Donna
Webb, of Vernonia Pride.
Vernonia Pride will have do
nation cans throughout town for
the fireworks; your help is
needed.

It was no contest when this Pepsi truck met a 50 year old canopy on the east side of Vernonia
High School. The driver was new to the route and apparently was unaware that there was any
other way to get to the park
ing lot.

Rep. Betsy Johnson
to be at Scout Cabin
State Rep. Betsy Johnson
(D-Scappoose) is holding town
hall meetings to discuss the
State’s current budget situation
and to outline alternatives for
the upcoming Special Session
to be convened this month.
Johnson will be meeting with
Vernonia area residents Satur
day, June 8, from 12:30 to l:30
p.m. at the Scout Cabin.
“The financial situation fac
ing Oregon has been going
from bad to worse. The most
recent financial forecast indi
cates that we are nearly $1 bil
lion in the red,” Johnson said.
There are only two ways to
bring the budget into balance:
Cut spending or raise taxes. I
am not anxious to pursue either
alternative, but am very anx
ious to hear what out district
residents think," Johnson said.
