Obituary
AGATHA R. WILLS
Agatha Ruth Wills, 95, Forest
Grove, died May 19, 2002. Private
family services were held.
Mrs. Wills was born August 11,
1906, in Vernonia, to Alonzo and Elsa
E. Dunn Emmons. She grew up in Mist
and Vernonia, graduated from high
school in Portland and Normal School
at Monmouth, to become a teacher.
She taught in Vernonia until marry­
ing Johnnie Boyd Nelson. They di­
vorced in 1931. She moved to Portland
and worked for Fred Meyer. In 1941,
she married Frank Wills. They lived in
Salem and Seattle, Wash. She taught
at Kings Garden Elementary School
until retiring. She moved back to Port­
land in 1990 and was a member of
Cedar Mill Bible Church.
Mrs. Wills was preceded in death by
two sisters, Vida Irene Emmons and
Margaret Emmons.
Survivors include a son, Jack Nel­
son of Portland; three grandchildren;
nine great-grandchildren; one great-
great-grandchild.
Remembrances are suggested to a
church of one's choice.
Westside Cremation Service was in
charge of arrangements.
NANNIE H. LYDA
Nannie Hattie Lyda, 88, Portland,
died May 7, 2002. Graveside memorial
services and interment were held May
13 at Mt. View Memorial Gardens in
Forest Grove.
Mrs. Lyda was born January 9,
1914, in Kansas, to Samuel Clifton and
Elsie May Hering Rollings. She grew up
in Kansas.
In 1931, she married Benjamin Jef­
ferson Lyda They lived in Forest Grove
and moved to Banks in 1951. They di­
vorced in 1973.
She worked as a homemaker and at
Gray & Co. until retiring in 1969. She
was a member of St. Anthony’s
Catholic Church in Forest Grove.
Mrs. Lyda was preceded in death by
two sons
Survivors include a son, Harold of
Beaverton, daughter, Elsie M. Davis of
Banks, sister, Mae Bruton of Washing­
ton; 14 grandchildren; 26 greatgrand­
children; one great-great-grandchild;
nieces and nephews.

LESTER L. “NICK” KORSMO
Lester L. "Nick" Korsmo, 69, Ver­
nonia, died May 17, 2002. Funeral ser­
vice was held May 22 at Fuiten, Rose &
Hoyt Funeral Home in Vernonia, with
Mr. William Korsmo officiating. Inter­
ment at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Korsmo was born March 15,
1933, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Vt/lliam
Lester and Ruth Irene Lloyd Korsmo.
When he was twelve, the family moved
to Manning and Banks, where he com­
pleted his education.
In 1964, he married Sharon Bosvelt.
They lived in Hillsboro until 1996, then
moved to Vernonia. Mr. Korsmo worked
for Bob Carlson, Pacific Roofing, Ken-
co Roofing and J&K Roofing.
He was preceded in death by five
sisters and one brother.
Survivors include his wife; son, Nick
L. of Newberg; daughter, Donna L. Ko­
rsmo of Vernonia; a brother, William of
Poulsbo, Wash.; three grandchildren.

ORVILLE BRITTON
Orville Britton, 85, Springfield, died
May 17, 2002. Graveside service was
held May 21 at Springfield Memorial
Gardens.
Mr. Britton was born May 26, 1916,
in Boyne City, Mich., td Clarence and
Golda Stark Britton. He graduated from
Vernonia High School and served in the
U S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He
worked as a mechanic and logger for
various companies.
In 1949, he married Betty L. Amick.
They lived in Michigan, Vernonia,
Sweet Home, Eugene, Alaska and
LaPine, until settling in Springfield.
He was a member of Church of
Christ in Sweet Home and First Christ­
ian Church in LaPine, the Odd Fellows
and American Legion.
Mr. Britton was preceded in death
by three grandchildren.
Survivors include sons, Gary of
Harrisburg, and Michael of Strouds­
burg, Penn.; daughters, Connie Clark
of Marsing, Idaho, and Michele Harris
of Springfield; eight grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren.
VERNA B. FINLEY
Verna Beatrice Finley, 89, Astoria,
died May 15, 2002. Memorial services
and inurnment were at Lincoln Memor­
ial Park in Portland.
Mrs. Finley was born February 7,
1913 in Butler, Okla., to John Oscar
and Lizzie Viola Summey Burt. She
grew up in Oklahoma and Vernonia.
She was a beautician.
In 1937, she married Howard De-
Veiteo. They later divorced. She lived in
Portland for 58 years and moved to As­
toria.
She was preceded in death by three
brothers, Robert, Cecil and Frank.
Survivors include a son, John De-
Veiteo of Bend; daughter, Carol Wam-
sher of Astoria; six grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; brothers, Guy Burt
of Grand Junction, Colo., and Cornish
Burt of Portland.
LELAND B. CRISMAN
Leland Burryl Crisman, 76, Hills­
boro, died May 20, 2002. Memorial ser­
vices were May 28, at Bronleewe-Bass
Funeral Home. Disposition was by cre­
mation.
Mr. Crisman was born July 27,
1925, to Leo William and Velma June
Mills Crisman. He grew up in Grand
Junction and Fruita, Colo., and attend­
ed Hillsboro High School.
In 1945, he married Omega Hargitt.
They lived in Hillsboro. He worked in
the Portland shipyards during World
War II, then for B P. Jones, and Peer­
less. He retired in 1981.
He was a member of the union and
Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Mr. Crisman was preceded in death
by a brother, John.
Survivors include his wife; daugh­
ters, Shirley Griffith of Hillsboro, Connie
Smith of Republic, Wash., Deborah An­
derson and Ronda Anderson, both of
Lapine, and Alina "Kim" Wynne of For­
est Grove; sons, David of Banks, and
Nathan of Cornelius, 18 grandchildren;
21 great-grandchildren; a sister. Jewel
Tollefson of Aloha; brothers, James W.
of Tigard and Albert of Junction City.

JOHN H. ELDRIDGE SR.
John Hugh Eldridge, Sr., 85, died
May 22, 2002. A funeral was held May
28 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat­
ter-day Saints Molalla Ward.
Mr. Eldridge was born November 2,
1916, in Banks. He graduated from
Hillsboro High School. During World
War II, he served in the U.S. Army in
the Philippines, then moved to Portland
and was an officer with the Milwaukie
Police Department. He also lived in Mo­
lalla and Silverton.
In 1965, he married Virginia Ross.
He was preceded in death by a son,
Donald R. in 1999.
Survivors include his wife, a son,
John Jr.; stepsons, Ross V. Smith and
Scott M. Smith; stepdaughters,
Brownyn J. Graves and Colleen M.
Kesterson; seven grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren.
MYRTLE O. WILKE
Myrtle Olivia Dunrud Wilke, 97, For­
est Grove, died May 22, 2002. Funeral
services were held May 25, at Fuiten,
Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home, with the
Rev. C. Eugene Sabin officiating. Inter­
ment was in St. Francis Cemetery, Roy.
Mrs. Wilke was born October 21,
1904, in the Township of Eden, Polk
County, Minn., to Peter O. and Anna
Engebretson Dunrud. The family
moved to Molalla when she was 14.
She later moved to White Salmon,
Wash.
In 1923, she married Melvin W.
Caven. They divorced in 1944.
In 1948, she married Howard A. An­
derson. They lived in Hoquiam and Ab­
erdeen, Wash. After his death, she
moved to Banks.
In 1971, she married Frank Wilke.
They lived in Bingen, Wash. She re­
turned to White Salmon after his death.
She moved to Banks in 1988, then to
Tigard and Forest Grove.
She was preceded in death by a
son, Melvin W. Caven; 13 brothers and
sisters.
Survivors include two daughters,
Patricia Caven Dierickx of Forest
Grove, and Etna Caven Metzger of
Tigard; nine grandchildren; 14 great­
grandchildren; eight great-great grand­
children; nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Alzheimer’s Association.

RICHARD R. VARNER
Richard Raymond Varner, 34, Yam­
hill, died May 22, 2002. Memorial ser­
vice was held May 24, at Bronleewe-
Bass Funeral Home in Hillsboro, with
Bryan McKelvey, chaplain of the Wash­
ington Co. Sheriff’s Office, officiating.
Mr. Varner was born May 21, 1968,
in Eugene, to Raymond J. and Diane
Lee Dickerson Varner. He grew up in
Yamhill, moved to Lincoln City and
graduated from Taft High School in
1987. He attended Oregon State Uni­
versity, majoring in sports physical ther­
apy. He worked at The Inn at Spanish
Head in Lincoln City, Embassy Suites in
Portland and Precision Auto Body in
Beaverton.
Survivors include his parents of
Yamhill; sisters, Candace of Boston,
Mass., Chris West of Sheridan, and
Lori Hill of Vernonia; half-sister, Mary
Leek of Corvallis; grandfather, Ralph
Jensen of Forest Grove.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
of Oregon.

EDWARD H. VANDERZANDEN
Edward Henry VanderZanden, 95,
Roy, died May 29, 2002. Mass of Chris­
tian Burial was held June 1 at St. Fran­
cis of Assisi Catholic Church, with the
Rev. Todd Molinari, celebrant. Inter­
ment was in St. Francis Cemetery.
Mr. VanderZanden was born Sep­
tember 20, 1906, in Roy, to Peter and
Gardena Meeuwsen VanderZanden.
He grew up in Roy and was educated in
Verboort.
In 1934, he married Madeline Cruni-
can. They lived on the family farm near
Roy. She died in 1967.
He married Sally Cover in 1969; she
died in 1988. In 1990, he married Nora
Millspaugh; she died in 1995.
Mr. VanderZanden was a farmer. He
worked his 100 acre farm near Roy un­
til retiring in 1968.
He was preceded in death by eight
brothers, Martin, Wilfred, Victor,
Charles, Bernard, Everest, William and
Marion; and four sisters, Josephine
Springer, Frances Cullen, Lambertha
Banzi and Laurencie Jesse.
Survivors include sons, Robert of
Alameda, Calif., and Eugene of Pied­
mont, Calif.; daughters, Evelyn Chalus-
towski of Bondorf, Germany, Diane
VanderZanden of Honolulu, Hawaii,
Regina Ferris of Aloha, Eilene Van-
Grunsven of Vancouver, Wash., and
Mary Derrick of Vernonia; seven grand­
children; one great-grandchild; nieces
and nephews.

RETHA E. SMITH
Retha Eula Smith, 83, Forest
Grove, died May 28, 2002. Funeral ser­
vice was held May 31, at Fuiten, Rose
and Hoyt Funeral Home, with Pastor
Jerry Hinz, of Cornelius Baptist Church,
officiating. Interment was in Arcade
Cemetery, North Plains.
Mrs. Smith was born December 6,
1918, in Elizabeth, Ark., to William and
Audi Isom Rand. She grew up in Bay,
Ark. She moved to North Plains in
1954, and Forest Grove in 1984. She
was a homemaker and cannery worker.
She was preceded in death by a
son in 1966; four brothers and a sister.
Survivors include daughters, Helen
Ridgeway of Gaston, Ellen of Buxton,
and Glenda Goddard of White City; 15
grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren;
three great-great grandchildren; sis­
ters, Beula Hester of Woodburn, Agnes
Wilson of Hillsboro, Josephine Watts of
Vancouver, Wash., Lula Fry of Lake
City, Ark., and Irene Friend of Williford,
Ark.; nieces and nephews.

SELINA REDMAN
Selina E. Van De Moortele Redman,
85, Portland, died May 26, 2002. Fu-
neral service was held May 30 at Mt.
Scott Funeral Home. Interment was in
St. Francis Cemetery in Roy.
Mrs. Redman was born March 7,
1917, near Laurel, to Emaranse and Ar-
schelle Van De Moortele. As a child,
she moved to a farm near Cornelius.
She graduated from Forest Grove High
School and attended business school,
then worked for the U.S. Bureau of
Land Management.
In 1950, she married David Red­
man. They lived in Portland until he re­
tired, when they moved to Banks.
She was preceded in death by her
husband in 1983.
Survivors include a sister, Jeannette
Desmet of Sisters; nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to
Multiple Sclerosis Society, Oregon
Chapter, or to Parkinson’s Resources
of Oregon.
HARVEY T. DETHLEFS
Harvey Theadore Dethlefs, 87, For­
est Grove, died May 25, 2002. Inter­
ment was private. A celebration of life
for he and his wife, Olive, will be Thurs­
day, July 4 at noon, at Mile Post 10 on
the Trask River.
Mr. Dethlefs was born July 2, 1914,
in Gaston, to Ernest and Tillie Herr
Dethlefs. He graduated from Gaston
High School in 1932.
In 1936, he married Olive H. Scott.
They lived in Scoggin Valley Junction
until the mid-1970s, when they moved
to Forest Grove.
Mr. Dethlefs was a professional
wrestler in Portland and worked in the
woods as a catskinner. He owned and
operated Yost and Dethlefs Logging
Co. and worked for Ralph Raines, until
retiring in 1969. He was also a real es­
tate agent for Red Carpet Realty.
He was a charter member of Forest
Grove Elks Lodge 2440, served as
president of the Community Club in
Gaston and on the Gaston Grade
School Board for 20 years.
Mr. Dethlefs was preceded in death
by his wife; two brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include two sons, Harve
R of Vernonia, and Douglas of Cor­
nelius; a daughter, Sharon K. Kober-
stein of North Bend; nine grandchil­
dren; 10 great-grandchildren; half-
brothers, Curt and Conrad Japel, both
of McMinnville, and Jerry Japel of
Sheridan; nieces and nephews.
