With proper storage, leftover house paint will be usable for years
What do you do with your
leftovers? At a restaurant, you
probably bring them home in a
doggie bag to enjoy later. At
home, you carefully wrap your
leftovers so you can keep them
fresh for later.
Did you know that what’s
good for food is also good for
paint? Many people don’t, be
cause far too much perfectly
good leftover paint ends up in
our nation’s landfills. It doesn't
even need to be an issue for
our environment at all, because
leftover paint isn’t a waste
product, and, when stored
properly, it stays fresh for
years.
The National Paint & Coat
ings Association has developed
the following Six-Point Program
for Leftover Paint. It helps the
environment, and it saves you
money:
1. When getting ready to
paint, buy just the amount you
need to do the job. When you
avoid buying too much at the
start, there’s less chance that
leftovers land in the trash later.
2. If you do have leftover
paint, store it so it lasts for
years. Just cover the opening
with plastic wrap and make
sure the lid fits securely so the

paint doesn’t leak. Then store
the paint can upside down! This
creates a tight seal and keeps
the paint fresh to use again.
3. Use up all your leftover
paint. It’s great for touch-up
jobs and smaller projects. You
can also blend and mix smaller
quantities of similar colors of la
tex paint to use as a primer on
larger jobs, or jobs where the fi
nal finish is not critical.
4. After you use up the paint,
what next? Always recycle the
empty paint can, of course, fol
lowing the can recycling proce
dures in you community. Plastic
paint pails and containers may
also be recycled in some areas.
5. If you can’t use your left
over paint, donate it or ex
change it. Community groups,
schools, churches and others
can use your leftover paint, and
you may even be able to take a
tax deduction!
6. As a last resort, if you
need to dispose of your leftover
paint, make sure you do it prop
erly.

choose to open Sundays and
others w ill remain closed.
Liquor stores inside other busi
nesses that normally stay open
on Sundays, are the most likely
to take advantage of the extra
day.
In this area, the liquor stores
in Vernonia, Banks and Birken-

be open on Sundays.
W here the liquor stores
stand alone, as in the rest of
Columbia County, they will re

According to the temporary
rule, participating liquor stores
may operate anytime between
7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Sun
days or holidays.
Oregon liquor stores may
open Sundays and holidays,
since April 14, under a bill
passed in February during a
special session of the state
Legislture.
Under HB 4028, Sunday
participation by liquor agents is
optional, but a num ber of
stores, especially in tourist or
recreation areas, will be open
Sundays, according to the Ore

signed to raise an additional $3
million in revenue for the state
general fund during the 2001-
2003 biennium.
Since Sunday/holiday sales
are optional, some stores will
