Shawn Robertson seeking sponsors Shawn Robertson, a junior at Vernonia High School, has been invited to participate in the 2002 Parkroyal Down Un der International Games in Australia. Robertson has been running track since the seventh grade and joined the VHS cross-country team last year. Running the 5k race at the state tournament, he placed sixth in state. Between ten and twenty Oregon athletes have been in vited to participate in the games, including two from Ver nonia. Ashley Murray is the other local athlete. Robertson is now seeking sponsors to help defray the $3,000 cost of the trip. He will be happy to answer any ques tions about the trip or his quali fications if you call him at 503- 429-4901. Leadership class says now is the time to raise money for needed VHS risers Instead of sitting around and waiting for “somebody” to do something, the leadership class at Vernonia High School is working to solve a long-standing problem: The school has no risers to use for events such as graduation. For the past two gradua tion ceremonies, risers have been borrowed from the Clatskanie School District. Prior to 1999, only the front row of the graduating class was visible when they were seated on the stage for grad uation. Realizing that continued borrowing may not be possi ble, and recognizing that ris ers would be a valuable addi tion for both graduation and other events, the leadership class has committed to rais ing the money necessary to purchase, and store, risers. Total cost for the risers, along with a carpet walkway and a storage facility, is nearly $6000. Undaunted, the students started the ball rolling with $1000 of their own, hard- earned money to the fund. They approached alumni and received nearly $600 from the Class of 2000 and almost $700 from the Class of 2001. A letter sent to local busi nesses this winter raised an additional $300. Two stu dents recently made a pres entation to the Vernonia Cham ber of Com m erce, which donated $250 to the fund. In spite of these efforts, the group still needs to raise ap proximately $3000. The stu dents remain committed and are being allowed to borrow from future fundraising so they may order the risers in time for graduation this year. Tickets are available, for a $5.00 donation, for a chance to win a 1989 Pontiac Le- Mans LE. Oregon Pacific Area Health Education Center, a private non-profit organization affiliated with OHSU, provides the rural rotation program so OHSU se nior dental hygiene students can train with local professionals and also learn about the rural communities in which they are working. The program’s goal is to encourage students to pur sue practice opportunities in ru ral Oregon after graduation. ¿AfiJlSLib&ß dSctA &■ Cbßh.
