Faith and resurrection are cantata topics
Final practices are underway
as the Vernonia Community
Choir and supporting actors
prepare for their upcoming per
formance this weekend, March
22, 23 and 24.
The Borrowed Tomb tells the
story of Christ’s death and res
urrection from the perspective
of two members of the San
hedrin, an elect group of Jew
ish leaders. Nicodemus, played
by Allen Vetch, and Joseph of
Arimathea, played by Pastor
John Cahill, struggle in their
faith and beliet as they interact
with each other, the rest of the
members of the Sanhedrin,
Mary Magdalene, played by
Kellie Murray, and Jesus,
played by Michael Skillin.
The drama is interspersed
with music which emphasizes
the struggles they, and all the
people of that day, were experi
encing. How would we feel if
Jesus were to come today?
Would He be accepted as our
Messiah? How can he forgive
us? These are some of the
questions asked and answered
in this forty-five minute presen
tation.
There will be three perform
ances, including one matinee,
at Washington Grade School
Gymnasium. There is no
admission charge. A free-will
offering will be accepted to help
cover production costs. Checks
may also be sent to the choir’s
treasurer, Marcella Seager at
536 First Avenue, Vernonia, OR
97064.
Performances are Friday,
March 22 at 7:30 p.m.; Satur
day, March 23 at 7:30 p.m.; and
Sunday, March 24 at 3:00 p.m.
“Don’t forget! This is the
weekend
before
Easter,”
reminds Director Lynda Cahill.
“Come and bring along a
friend!” she urged.
Time to hit the dictionary and brush up your spelling
Get out your dictionaries, all
you over-50 people...there will
be a spelling bee on Saturday,
May 18, at 1:00 p.m. at the
Senior Center.
The format will be similar to
last year’s spelling bee: 100
written words, with several
breaks between sets of words.
This year, the words will be
announced by last year’s win
ner, Noni Andersen. Refresh
& jfbrefit
ments will be served and there
will be prizes for the winners.
The planners of this year’s
contest promise a more “user-
friendly” list of words. In fact,
the chances are very good that
you've read, used or seen most
of the words at some time dur
ing the last year!

March first as we walked our
dogs. So, you fishermen had
better have tasty bait to get
your share of the fish.
By the way, the Mammo
gram van will be in Vernonia on
March 26. Ladies, if you
haven’t had a “mammo” in a
year or two, call the clinic and
set up a date.
Do you have your Easter
Bonnet picked out or made
yet? Remember the dinner and
fashion show at the center is
March 27. Get in and sign up
for dinner or for making a pie or
to help serve. The Golden
Oldies will be there. It hopes to
be a fun time.
March is sort of mixed up,
yes, we had the wind, but
where did all the rains of April
come from? The snow? It’s just
last December. So cold you
can’t work in the yard because
it's covered with ice, snow and
mud.
The center has had spurts of
business because of the
weather, but on our first Satur
day open we were well
pleased. Remember to pass
the word. The thrift area is open
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each
Saturday.
Some changes in the Thrift
Store. You’ll see a lot of rear
ranging going on. They are
cleaning out again. Winter is
going, Spring is coming and
with it, all Rack items will be
price tagged. Shoes will be tag
priced. All “Bag” items will not
have a price on them. There
are signs on the Racks to help
you, the customer, and also “If”
you see a sign, please read it.
Especially the one that says
“No exchanges - all sales final."
The folks try to know if an item
does or does not work when it
is put out, and it is priced
accordingly. It will be tagged “It
works” if it does. Some folks
are handy enough and like to
tinker with small appliances, or
they just need a piece of it to fix
what they have.
Remember the Easter Can
tata, by the joint Churches. It is
a week before Easter this year.
