Candidates needed for CPAC elections
Columbia County will hold
elections tor expiring positions
on Citizen Planning Advisory
Committees (CPACs). CPAC
members serve for two-year
terms. The terms to be filled will
expire on Feb. 28, 2002.
CPACs provide advice and
recommendations to county
Hand use planning entities, in­
cluding the Planning Depart-
ment, the Planning Commis­
sion and the Board of County
Commissioners.
Each CPAC is divided into
neighborhoods, with members
representing neighborhoods in
which they reside or own prop­
erty. Residents and/or property
owners within the neighbor­
hoods elect their CPAC mem­
bers. To hold an election for a

screening of your well water for
nitrate, bring a cup of untreated
well water to class. Nitrate level
is an indicator of drinking wa­
ter’s safety.
To have your well or spring
water tested for coliform bacte­
ria, pick up water sample bot­
tles and detailed instructions
between February 11 and test
dates of February 14 or 20, at
one of the following designated

fered by the Vernonia Business
Assistance Team (VBAT)
Four three-hour classes will
be held February 26-27 and
March 26-27, with a choice of
afternoon or evening sess-
dions. The instructor will be
Jane Gildner, who is with the
Small Business Development
Corporation at Clatsop Com­
munity College.
VBAT has funded half of the
course fee of $100 per person,
allowing local business people
to take advantage of the ad­
vanced course for only $50. To

Payment of $16 per test
must be made when picking up
bottles. Check may be made
payable to OSU Extension Ser­
vice.
Drop off water samples in
the test bottles before 10:00
a.m. on February 14 or 20.
Results will be returned to
the Washington County OSU
Extension Service for distribu­
tion at the February 26 class. If
you are unable to attend, re­
sults will be mailed.

class is helpful; walk-ins are
welcome if space allows. Con­

neighborhood. Voting eligibility
requires either a picture identi­
fication showing that you live in
the CPAC neighborhood where
you will cast your ballot, or a
tax statement showing that you
own property within the CPAC
neighborhood. Voters must be
at least 18 years old.
The Mist-Birkenfeld CPAC
election will be on February 20
at 7:00 p.m. at the Hemeon
residence, 14090 Wallace
Road, Mist, to fill three posi­
tions presently held by Art
Laubach, Leo Plas and Vicki
Weller.
No election is scheduled for
the Upper Nehalem CPAC be­
cause there have been no
members for several years.
The seven vacant positions are
for the neighborhoods of City of
Vernonia, Highway 47, Pebble
Creek, Keasey, Pittsburg-
Stoney Point, Timber Route
and Treharne. If you are inter­
ested in forming a CPAC in the
Vernonia area, contact Glen

Tax information will be posted
throughout state in public areas
Posters will soon be up in
grocery stores, Employment
Department offices and DMV
offices throughout Oregon to
help taxpayers find state in­
come tax forms and informa­
tion. The posters, in English
and Spanish, will direct taxpay­
ers to the nearest post office, li­
brary or other location where
the forms and information are
located.
