Klamath Tribes basketry will be featured at High Desert Museum
«
Since ancient times, the Kla
math Tribes of southern Ore
gon and northern California
have practiced a distinctive
basket-making tradition. Using
natural fibers such as tules,
cattails, willows and porcupine
quills, skilled Klamath weavers
create winnowing trays, hats,
quivers and bowls. In the early
part of the 20th century, private
collectors and museums recog
nized the beauty of these works
and gathered them by the hun-
household goods, and items of
clothing for the Klamath Tribes.
After the arrival of European
and American traders, basketry
also provided a new source of
income, and tribal basketry en
tered a golden era that lasted
from the late 1800s until the
Depression in 1930. Basket
makers crafted pieces for sale
to a growing collectors market,
designing tourist trade pieces
and working with new styles,
dyes and materials available
dreds.
On Nov. 3, The High Desert
Museum, in association with
the Klamath Tribes, will open a
major exhibit that tells the story
of this special basketry.

handmade goods and art be
came popular among wealthy
and middle class Americans,
who gathered large collections.
In the early 1990s, the Klamath
Tribes acquired a collection of
more than 700 baskets from a
Klamath Falls family, from
which baskets for this exhibit
were selected.
The baskets exhibit is includ
ed with museum admission of
$8.50 for adults, $7.50 seniors
(65+) and youth (13-18), $4
children (5-12). It is free for
