We were able to enjoy the
“thrill of victory” many times
and suffered the “agony of
defeat” a few times. But we did
it as a team that understood
that every player was trying
their hardest.
I have been on and coached
teams, as have many of us,
that have lost because of a
player not playing to the best of
their ability. There is nothing
worse in sports (life) than
knowing that, no matter how
hard you and/or your team
mates try, one individual who is
not giving their best effort can
be the difference between win
ning and losing (or should I say
“having more fun” as opposed
to just “having f un”). If that
happens in the adult world, that
person would probably be
known as a “slacker” and
would soon be replaced by a
more able person.
Winning (success) is conta
gious, and once you taste it,
you tend to want it more, not
just in sports, but also life, and
in the process, you work hard
er and stay much more
focused toward that goal.
Along the way, you learn more
about yourself and probably
discover abilities you never
dreamed you possessed. That
attitude transcends throughout
your efforts in all aspects of life
and will usually lead to suc
cess.
As a parent, I expect my
children to give their best effort,
no matter what it is. And, if it
doesn’t meet with the degree of
success they want, then they
know they need to try harder if
they want to continue in that

endeavor, or find another inter
est to which their skills can be
more aptly applied. Why
should I, as a coach, expect
less from my players?
I would suggest to the play
ers who did not make the team
this year to work on their skills.
I am available to hit groun-
ders/flyballs at the field if you
are not able to do it with your
parents/friends. Call me and
we can set up a time to meet

It was a privilege for me to
coach a group of young men
who shared a vision and,
although we didn’t reach our
ultimate goal this year, I know
the majority of them will be
back at it next year, with even
more desire and focus.
To all players who try their
hardest and give 100% of
themselves, keep it up. How
you approach sports is how

tent to submit proposals to provide school
based Tobacco Cessation services for youth
using TEG/TAP; for a school based Alcohol
and Drug Prevention Specialist to provide
services for youth 5 to 18 years; for After
School and Summer programs for youth
ages 5 to 18 using a collaborative process
and providing equity of service county wide;
and to provide school based Medically
Needy services. Prospective providers must
be able to demonstrate their ability to pro
vide research based services which
strengthen current systems and can be pro
vided county wide. A Letter of Intent must be
submitted on one page and must include:
program, name of contact, phone, fax and
email address. They are due to the CCC-
CF, Courthouse, Room 301, St. Helens, OR
97051, on August 6, 2001, by 4:00 p.m. Pro
posals are due on August 29, 2001, by 4:00
