scoring guides required by the
state. Based on a belief that all
students deserve access to a
rich arts education regardless
of their talents, background
and challenges, the standards
are meant to focus efforts to
ward common goals for every
child.
Similar to already estab
lished standards, the standards
for the arts are intended to pro
vide every student with a set of
skills and encourage critical
thinking. The arts standards at
tempt to ensure that students
make connections between
concepts and across subject
areas by developing an inte
grated curriculum.
Marguerite Nice, represent
ing the committee, said that the
standards will not create any
new programs at this time, but
will allow documentation of cur
rent practices. The standards
also allow the district to ac
