Host families needed
for exchange students
To the Editor:
Have you even th o u g h t
about making a difference in
the world, but were just not
sure what direction you should
take to accomplish this? I am
part of an organization that
can give you that opportunity.
Council Exchanges places
interational high school ex
change students, and I am
writing to appeal to your sense
of community and to ask for
your assistance.
Every year, we have stu
dents from all over the world
that want to come to the Unit
ed States to become a part of
an American family and attend
high school. O ur dilem m a
comes when we reach out to
the communities to ask fami
lies to volunteer and host one
of these students.
Many times, we get the re
sponse th a t this is a great
cause and it just sounds so
w onderful, but... There are
many excuses for not taking a
student, but the benefits far
outweigh any of them.
The students all speak En
glish, have their own spending
m oney and have com plete
medical coverage. A host fami
ly would provide a bed, meals
and a loving fam ily environ
ment. The students are due to
arrive in August and will return
home in mid-June. This may
seem like a long time, but look
how fast this year has zoomed

by. Ten months is a short time
when compared to the rest of
your life. This is such a won
derful opportunity to impact the
life of a teenager. We like to
think of this as a ten-month
community service project that
benefits the family, as well as
the student.
If you have a family in the
area that would like to host or
would like more information on
hosting, please call me at 503-
357-9610, or call Sue Bailey in
Buxton at 503-324-1803.
