Modern gun slingers compete at fast draw action
Men, women and children,
including large numbers of
shooters from Canada and
around the United States, are
all fascinated by the fast-draw
competition, with its roots in the
world of movie westerns, as
they compete for trophies and
cash prizes in different cate
gories.
Fast draw features two sep
arate events; the first is a head-
to-head shootout with a balloon
target, with two shooters, vying
for the best of ten rounds in
both speed and accuracy. Bul
lets are not used in this event.
The target balloons are burst
by excess powder in the car
tridge.
In the second competition,
contestants use 45 caliber am
munition with a shotgun primer
and a bullet made of wax.
Shooters compete individually,
with targets that are 20 inches
wide and 40 inches high, firing
from distances of five, eight,
10, 12, and 15 feet.
Speed, agility and accuracy are needed by successful con
testants in the Fast Draw competition.
Contests are measured by a
digital timer which reads the
action to 275/1000 of a second.
The weapons used in these
events are usually Colt 45s or
Ruger .357s bored to 45 cal
ibers.
The shootout will begin Sat
urday, August 4, at 10:30 a.m.
in Hawkins Park. Registration
is at 10:00 a.m.
Ray and Claire Thielke spon
sor the event. Ray is chairman
of the board of the World Fed
eration Fast-draw Association.
