anks historic log cabin is nearing completion
This modern children’s play structure shares space with the
old log cabin in Banks’ Log Cabin Park.
Restoration work on the old log cabin is nearing completion.
Renovation of the historical
Scout Cabin is nearing comple
tion in Banks. Fathers of boys
in Troop 240, and other local
men, built the original Scout
Cabin in 1930. Boards used in
the log cabin were milled at the
Lundeen Sawmill and Duke
Brickyard provided bricks.
The building is on the Wash
ington County Historical Build
ings Registry and has been
used as city offices in the past.
Until approximately three years
ago the Boy Scouts were still

meeting there, as was a local
quilting group.
Over the years the building
had deteriorated, however, and
was in very poor condition.
Then, in 1997, the City of
Banks received a Community
Development Block Grant of
$111,000 to restore the cabin.
Extensive restoration work
has included replacing the bot
tom three, and sometimes four,
tiers of logs, replacing win
dows, adding a gas fireplace,
redoing the electric service to
the building, treating the roof
and pouring a concrete pad for
the building. Drainage around
the building was also improved
and new picnic tables, a play
structure and a water fountain
were added to the park. Only
the fireplace and the water
fountain remain to be complet
ed.
Matt Pihl Excavating, of
Banks, was the general con
tractor; the log restoration was
done by A Place in the Sun, of
Timber. The city’s consulting
engineer, Dale Merrell of Navi
gant Consulting,supervised the
restoration and performed the
necessary engineering.
When finished, the building
will be available for use by
community groups. Fees have
not yet been set by the city
council. Though the building is
quite small and, at this time,
has no furnishings, it remains a
valuable asset to the communi
ty that will now survive for
many years.
Moby Pendergrass, left, and Gary Pendergrass have been
doing restoration work on the deteriorated logs in the Banks
Log Cabin. Gary Pendergrass owns A Place in the Sun Log
Homes in Timber.
