RICHARD S. HUNTEMAN
Richard S. Huntsman, 80, Vernon­
ia, died Sept. 2, 2000. Funeral Mass
was held Sept. 6 at St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Vernonia, with Fr. Todd Moli-
nari officiating. Burial was at Vernonia
Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include his daughters,
Nancy Carpenter of Deer Island, Sheri
Fenn of Riddle and Jeina Crawford of
Natal; one son, Robert of Hillsboro.
Remembrances are suggested to
the American Heart Association, 1425
SE Irving, Portland, OR 97232.

GRACE E. MATHEWS
Grace Elizabeth Mathews, 87,
Clatskanie, died August 25, 2002, in
Longview, Wash. Services were held
August 31, in Mist, with Elder Wes
Schlenker of the Reorganized Latter-
Day Saint Church of Longview. Inter­
ment was at Mist Cemetery.
Mrs. Mathews was born January
14, 1913, in Sublett, Idaho, to Herbert
and Ida (Powers) Condit. In 1920, the
family moved to a farm near Vernonia.
She graduated from Vernonia High
School in 1931. She received her BS in
1963 and taught grade school for 37
years at Natal, Vernonia and Mist.
She married Walter Mathews in
1941. They lived in Mist. She was a
member of the Natal Grange, the Mist-
Birkenfeld
Helping
Circle,
the
Clatskanie and Vernonia Senior Citizen
Centers and the Reorganized Latter-
Day Saint Church in Longview, Wash.
Survivors include her husband; a
daughter, Marian Benita Clark of Iowa
City, Iowa; a foster daughter, Judy
for the Vernonia Planning Commission.
She was preceded in death by
three brothers, Merle Schmid, Marvin
Schmid and Harold Schmid.
Survivors include her husband,
Claude; a daughter, Darlene Newman
of Portland; a son, Kenneth of
Maryville, Tenn.; a brother, Jim Schmid
of Hoquiam, Wash.; six grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; numerous
nieces and nephews.

ments.
Bjornson Carder of Burley, Idaho; two
sisters, Lillian Buchanan of San Diego,
Calif., and Ruby Clark of Cornelius; a
brother, Ralph Condit of Portland; five
foster grandchildren and nine foster
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
three brothers and a sister.
Remembrances are suggested to:

Birkenfeld Helping Circle, Clatskanie
Senior Citizens or Vernonia Senior Cit­
izens.

Clatskanie was in charge of arrange­
ments.
JUDY A. OLSON
Judy Ann Olson, 48, Banks, died
August 19, 2000, in Hillsboro. Funeral
mass was held August 23 at St. Fran­
cis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy,
with Fr. Todd Molinari and Bishop Ken­
neth Steiner, celebrants. Interment was
at St. Francis Cemetery.
Mrs. Olson was born February 21,
1952, in Hillsboro to Norbert and Betty
(Vuylsteke) Krieger. She graduated
from Banks High School in 1970.
She married Ron Olson in 1972.
They lived in Banks after their mar­
riage.
RUTH E. VEAL
Ruth Elizabeth Veal, 75, Vernonia,
died August 19, 2000, in Forest Grove.
A memorial service was held August 27
at the Veal family home with Elder
Willard Loewen officiating. Interment
was in North Cemetery at Clear Creek,
Vernonia.
Mrs. Veal was bom February 9,
1925, in Aberdeen, Wash., to Floyd
and Edith (Newman) Schmid. She
grew up in Aberdeen and graduated
from high school in 1942.
She married Claude Veal in 1946 in
Vancouver, Wash. They lived in Wash­
ington for fifteen years before moving
to Idaho, Arizona and Oregon. In 1971,
they moved to Vernonia.
In Arizona, they owned and operat­
ed a motel and in eastern Oregon, she
worked for the U.S. Forest Service.
She was bookkeeper for their busi­
ness, C&R Gardens, in Vernonia. She
retired in the late 1980’s.
Mrs. Veal was a member of the
Seventh Day Adventist Church and
held several offices throughout the
years. She was secretary of the first
water district formed in Ukiah and for
Mrs. Olson was a teller at US Bank
in Banks until May, when she retired.
Survivors include her husband; two
daughters, Tricia Gerding of Philomath
and Laurie Kemper of Forest Grove;
two sons, Eric and Brian, both of
Banks; her parents, of Tillamook;
brothers Ron Krieger of Aloha, Ken
Krieger of Juneau, Alaska, and Mark
Krieger of Hillsboro; sisters, Karen
Schmidlin of Banks, Jane Wanberg of
Tualatin and Mary Lou Vandehey of
Gales Creek; numerous nieces and
nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Baseball and Softball Programs at
Banks High School or to the computer
Lab Fund at St. Francis Grade School
in Banks.

was in charge of the arrangements.
GERTRUDE E. ANDERSON
Gertrude Elizabeth Anderson, 78,
Rainier, died August 28, 2000, in
Longview, Wash. Requiem Mass was
Sept. 2 at the Nativity of the Blessed
Virgin Mary Catholic Church with Fr.
Luan Tran, celebrant. Interment was at
Hudson Cemetery, Rainier.
Mrs. Anderson was bom Sept. 25,
1921, in Orange, Texas, to Frank and
Ida (Bradley) McCabe. She moved to
Lake Charles, La, and then to Vernon­
ia. She graduated from Vernonia High
School in 1939. She married Kenneth
George Anderson, Sr. in 1942. moved
to Rainier in 1957. He died in 1980.
