County emergency services prepares for Hood-to-Coast throng
While 20,000 participants in
this year’s Hood to Coast and
Portland to Coast relays might
be good news to area busi
nesses, the addition of that
many people along with 2,000
support vans, means added re
sponsibility for local emergency
management personnel.
In preparation for this year’s
event, to be held Aug. 25 and
26, law enforcement, fire, med

nelp minimize the impact on lo
cal residents and emergency
service providers, as well as to
ensure the safety of relay par
ticipants.
“O ur number one objective
is to maintain essential em er
gency services for local resi
dents while at the same time
providing medical support and
traffic enforcem ent for those
participating in the event,” said
John Clouse, Colum bia County
Emergency Management Co
ordinator.
St. Helens RFPD and Mist-
Birkenfeld RFPD personnel will
man first aid stations at various
points along the route. This will
provide relay participants with
aid and the impact on local
emergency medical services.
As with any large event,
com munication is a critical fac
tor. The ham operators group
A m ateur Radio Em ergency
Services (ARES) will be on
duty again this year to provide
information to em ergency serv
ice providers and relay officials.
The relays, which begin ear
ly on Aug. 25, will enter Colum
bia County on Highway 30 and
continue through Scappoose
until turning west onto Berg
Road. W inding past the County
Fairgrounds and through Yank-
ton, the course continues on
Pittsburg Road, Schaffer Road
and Apiary Road until reaching
Hwy. 47. On Hwy. 47, the run-
ners/walkers will travel north
west to Mist, then onto Hwy.
202 toward the final destination
at Seaside.
With the number of people
and vehicles on the road, a pri-
cle. Other information, such as
the team name, and vehicle
make and model is also help
ful. Race officials for the first
time will be issuing “parking
tickets" which could lead to the
team being penalized.
Run/walk fundraiser to benefit 4-H
The Columbia County 4-H
Youth Development Program
will host its first 5K Run/Walk
fund raiser Saturday, August
19, with a 9:00 a.m. start. The
event will begin and end at the
plaza in Old Towne St. Helens.
The proceeds will be used to
fund educational programs and
special awards, according to
Woody Davis, OSU Extension
Service 4-H Agent. Davis also
expressed the hope that the
run/walk will become an annu
al event.
Registration is $15.00 be
fore August 14 and $20.00 on
the day of the race. The fee in
cludes a T-shirt for those who
register before the 14th. Door
prizes will be given after the
event.
Boise Cascade Corp., Co
lum bia R iver PUD, Friesen
Lumber, KOHI Radio, and Wal
Mart are also sponsoring the
event. “W ithout them, we could
have never gotten this off the
ground,” said Davis.
