Staggenborg is Citizen of the Year As we head into the new mil lennium, the Vernonia Jam boree Citizen of the Year for 2000 is none other than the person who has given lots of time during the past four years to head up the many responsi bilities of the Jamboree com-' mittee — Treasa Staggenborg. As president of the committee she has had to oversee the nu merous committees and activi ties which make this annual event a successful community celebration. Treasa and her husband, Craig, moved to Vernonia ten years ago to take over as dis tributors of The Oregonian. In that capacity, they rise every day at 3:00 a.m. to pick up the papers in Clatskanie. They di vide the papers, and each spends about four hours, deliv ering the morning paper to sub scribers before breakfast. The Staggenborgs also bought, remodeled and gave a new life to an old, barely stand ing hotel, a relic from the ‘20s when Vernonia was a boom town. They gutted the interior and built modern motel rooms with outside entrances, elimi nating the old central hall of the hotel. In March of ‘96, after three years of hard work, the grand opening of the Vernonia Inn Bed & Breakfast revealed 15 rooms, some with hot tubs, a suite with a hot tub and pri vate balcony, and an inviting lobby. The inn’s exterior, with its balccnies and soft yellow and white color scheme, has provided the community with a classic beauty in place of a derelict. In her “spare time,” Treasa is also involved in other com munity and school activities. She and Craig have two chil dren in local schools.
