"Full Steam Ahead into the New Millennium”
Please forgive our excitement, but the two photos
on this page illustrate one cause. When you return
next year for Jamboree, the rocky, uneven former
railroad bed below will be as easy to walk or bike on
as the path around Lake Vernonia, shown in- the
photo above. When that is done, a long hoped-for
extension of the Banks-Vernonia Linear Trail will be
completed between Vernonia Lake and the current
trailhead at Anderson Park. In the process,
we will also gain a safe route for bikers and
walkers who now have to use a narrow
path along Hwy. 47. We are both pleased
and excited and want to share that excite
ment with you— our visitors. The Jamboree
theme quoted above is appropriate for
Vernonia.
For even more reasons why we feel so
excited, please see pages six and seven.
A welcome from the mayor
A cheery welcome to all the visitors to
our community and Jamboree. Enjoy all
the civic improvements that have taken
place, new downtown revitalization, side
walks, lights, trees and floral arrange
ments. Visit our new City Hall, new library
and the rebuilt Scout Cabin in Hawkins
Park.
This is our 44th annual Friendship Jam
boree. It was first organized to prevent the
city from dying after the closure of the mill
that was the city’s primary employer in the
fifties. You will find we are alie and vibrant.
Enjoy your visit and come back again
soon.
Mayor Art Parrow
