The Hangout offers activities for youth in a secure environment

Vernonia’s newest business,
an under 21 club called The
Hang Out opened July 8, with
plenty of activities to keep the
business’ 10-20 year old pa
trons busy. A ctivities range
from pool and air hockey, to a
mini movie theater and danc
ing.
The fun is not unsupervised
though. O wner Shawn Jackson
said that The Hang Out is a
“safe and controlled atm os
phere. The Hang Out is as safe
as you can get.” Security cam
eras monitor every area of the
club, and every youth under
the age of eighteen must be
signed up by a parent before
receiving a picture ID issued by
The Hang Out.

sons. First, the building inspec
tor wanted it done as a safety
barrier, and second, it prevents
outside interference."
Jackson plans on adding
m ore attractions, such as
karaoke or a video game ar
cade, and possibly having
theme nights. ‘T h e re may be a
night for parents to come in
and check out the place with
their children who have signed
up. I wanted to give parents
and teenagers a chance to
spend some time together be
cause some parents and teens
are busy, in and out, and don’t
always spend a lot of time to
gether,” he said. There may be
a country music night, an adult
night, and more.
The H ang Out em ploys
young people in various jobs,
from deejaying to working in
the concession stand, but ac
cording to Jackson, if kids don’t
start com ing in more, he may
have to open The Hang Out to
the public. “ I don’t really want
to do that, because it w ouldn’t
be just for the kids anym ore,”
he said.
The Hang O ut is open
W ednesday and T hursday
from 3:00 to 11:00 p.m, Friday
and Saturday, from 3:00 p.m.
to 1:00 a.m., and Sunday from
3:00 to 10:00 p.m. The cover
charge of $4 before 7:00 p.m.,
and $5:00 after 7:00 p.m. pro
vides for all activities. There
are no other charges except for
concessions.
