The public is invited to attend both the
workshop and Council meeting.
Public Hearings are scheduled for July 20,
2000 at 6:30 p.m. before the Planning
Commission of the City of Vernonia and
July 24, 2000 at 6:00 p.m. before the Ver
nonia City Council to consider an applica
tion for a zone change of certain property.
The properties being considered for zone
change are 4404-024-13200, 4404-024-
13300, and 4404-024-13400.

JOHN A. LOMAX, JR
John Alexander Lomax, Jr., 76, Ver
nonia, died July 7, 2000, at his home.
Private interment was held.
Mr. Lomax was born September 2,
1923, in Houston, Tex., to John A. Lo
max, Sr, and Bernice B. (Beaty) Lo
max. He grew up in Ft. Worth, Texas,
and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He was a veteran of World War II,
serving in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to
1945. Following his discharge from the
Navy, Mr. Lomax lived in Albuquerque
and Farmington, New Mexico, until
1978, when he moved to La Grande. In
1980, he moved to Vernonia.
Mr. Lomax was an electrician, but
also owned and operated Lomax
Milling Company, a portable sawmill,
for several years until he retired. He
was a lifetime member of the National
Rifle Association.
He was preceded in death by a sis
ter, Dorothy Coons.
Survivors include daughters Laura
L. Grisolano of Kirtland, New Mexico;
Wilma K. Simmerman and Beverly Ann
Watkins, both of Farmington, New
Mex.; a son, James B. of Farmington,
New Mex. ; sister, Marjorie Lou Baker
of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; numerous nieces
and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to a
charity of choice.

DR. FREDRICK C. NACHTIGAL, SR
Dr. Fredrick Car) Nachtigal, Sr., 76,
Portland, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000,
at his home. Private family services will
be held at a later date.
Dr. Nachtigal was born February
12,1924, in St. Paul, Minn., to Fredrick
Carl and Fanny (Widmer) Nachtigal.
He grew up in Minnesota and after
graduating from high school, served
three years as a pharmacist in the U.S.
Navy, He later attended the University
of Minnesota, graduating in 1953.
He married Kathleen Boyd in 1950,
in St. Paul, Minn. After graduation, he
served his internship in California, then

ber of the Tuality Hospital Board for 25
years. He was also a member of the
Nature Conservancy.

Fred of Hillsboro, and Charles of Port
land; daughter, Helen Quding of
Beaverton, and five grandchildren.

the Nature Conservancy.

ERNEST M. SULLIVAN
Ernest Morris Sullivan, 85, Vernon
ia, died July 11, 2000. A memorial ser
vice was held July 15 at the Vernonia
Seventh-day Adventist Church. Dispo
sition was by cremation. Inurnment will
be in Tennessee.
Mr. Sullivan was bom July 2, 1915
in Martin, Tenn., to John L and Belle
(Pounds) Sullivan.
He married Beatrice Moore in 1937
in Chicago. They lived in Tennessee
and Arkansas before moving to Ver
nonia in 1981.
Mre. Sullivan worked as a sales
man and photographer.
He was preceded in death by three
brothers and a sister.
Survivors include his wife; daugh
ter, Loretta Seibert of Vernonia; sons,
Paul of McAlister, Okla., Ronny of Yu
caipa, Calif., Wynn of Royal Palm
Beach, Fla., and Roger of Nashville,
Tenn.; sisters, Nell DeSmit of Ida,
Mich., and Mary Elizabeth Kenton of
Hendersons, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren
and 20 great-grandchildren.

ington County, died June 13, 2000, at
Tuality Community Hospital in Hills
boro. Private services were held. A re
membrance gathering will be held in
August at the south fork of the Santiam
River. Disposition was by cremation.

The Vernonia Planning Commission cur
rently has one vacancy. Any interested per
son wishing to serve on the Commission
Mr. McClain was born July 25,
1924, in Albany, to Ray and Grace
(Hymes) McClain. He grew up in New
Port, Wash., and graduated from
Washington State University with a
bachelor of science degree in mechan
ical engineering.
He served w ith the U.S. Arm y in Eu
rope during W orld W ar II.
In 1946, he married Eunice May
Meredith in Dallas, Tex. They lived in
Pullman, Wash., until 1955 when they
moved to the Seattle/Tacoma area.
They moved in 1969 to Monmouth,
then to Forest Grove in 1971. They
separated in 1978. Mr. McClain later
lived in the Beaverton, Hillsboro and
Tualatin areas.
Mr. McClain worked as a mechani
cal engineer at aerospace companies
throughout the Pacific Northwest, and
for Trojan Nuclear Power Plant. He re
tired in 1978, then sold real estate until
1984.
He was preceded in death by a sis
ter, Mary Kay McClain.
Survivors include sons, Ron of
Roseburg, Phil of Corvallis, and Gil of
Banks; daughters, Vera Meredith of
Longview, Wash., and Diane Hatai of
Fresno, Calif.; brother, Walter of Seat
tle; sister, Shirley Dahlin of Silverton;
eight grandchildren, two great-grand
children; several nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to
the American Heart Association.
Westside Cremation Service was in
charge of arrangements.
MARION E. NOGLE
Marion E. Nogle, 61, Sherwood,
died July 11, 2000. A private service
was held. Disposition was by crema
tion, with inurnment at Ocean View
Cemetery in Warrenton.
Mrs. Nogle was born Sept. 13,
1938, in Salt Lake City to Dazel C. and
Eleanor M. (Houston) Jones. She was
raised in the Knappa and Jewell areas.
She married Jaxon E. Nogle in
1961. They lived in Jewell, Eugene and
Portland before moving to Sherwood.
She was a homemaker.

died July 10, 2000, at a daughter’s
home in Roy. Funeral services were
held July 13 at Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt
Funeral Home in Forest Grove, with
the Rev. Kas Kachmarek, chaplain of
the northwest region of the Good
Shepherd Lutheran Home of the West,
officiating. Interment was in St. Francis
Cemetery in Roy.
Mrs. Korsmo was born Dec. 4,
1943, in Hillsboro, to Frank and Evelyn
(Puncochar) Horlacher. She was
raised in Banks and graduated from
1962 Banks High School In In 1962.
She married John N. Korsmo Sr., In
Forest Grove in 1962. They lived in
several communities including Tillam
ook and Hillsboro before moving to
Brighton, Mich., in 1972. They returned
to Oregon in 1982 and lived in Banks
and Cornelius. Mrs. Korsmo moved to
Hillsboro in 1998.
Mrs. Korsmo was a caregiver for
developmentally disabled adults at the
Good Shepherd Home of the West in
