Obituary
HOWARD W. CARTER
Howard William Carter, 80, Vernon­
ia, died May 23, 2000. Graveside ser­
vices were held May 31 at Vernonia
Memorial Cemetery, with a flag honor
presentation by American Legion Post
#119.
Mr. Carter was born Dec. 10 1919,
in Kalama, Wash., to Daniel William
and Lyda Elizabeth (Short) Carter. He
was raised in Rainier.
He was a veteran of World War II,
serving in the 1504th Army Air Force
BU, serving from 1943 until his dis­
charge in 1946.
Mr. Carter married Dorothy L.
Scates in 1945, in Reno, Nev. They
made their home in Sacramento, Calif.,
until 1946, when they moved to Goble,
then to the Mist/Birkenfeld area two
years later. In 1952, they moved to Ver­
nonia.
He worked in the timber industry for
several companies, including Clarke
and Wilson, Stimson Lumber Compa­
ny, Allied Logging, and Crown Zeller-
bach, where he worked for 20 years
until his retirement in 1981.
Mr. Carter was a member of the
American Legion Post 119 in Vernonia.
He was preceded in death by his
wife in 1997, brothers Harold, Robert
D., Henry D., Herbert and Daniel, and
a sister, Helen Roberts.
Survivors include four children, Jon
H. of Hillsboro, Claudia E. Oblack and
Mary Lou Busch, both of Mist, and
Kathleen Jane Simpson of Netarts; a
foster son, William Houten of Stafford,
Va; a sister, Anne Marie Singook of
Naples, Fla.; eleven grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren; numerous
nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Vernonia Rural Fire Protection Dis­
trict, 555 E. Bridge Street, Vernonia,

AMY A. VANDOMELEN
Amy Adelda VanDomelen, 83, For­
est Grove, died June 8, 2000, in Hills­
boro. Funeral services were held June
12 at Donelson, Sewell and Mathews
Mortuary in Hillsboro, with Father
Robert Cieslinski officiating. Interment
was in St. Francis Cemetery in Roy.
Mrs. VanDomelen was born Dec.
27, 1916, in Portland, to Earl and Sadie
(Keen) Hollenbeck. She was raised in
the Banks area and graduated from
Banks High School.
She married Leonard VanDomelen
in 1934. They began farming in 1948,

Mrs. VanDomelen moved to Forest
Grove in 1987. She was a member of
St. Matthew’s Church.
She was preceded in death by her
husband in 1980, and two sons,
Leonard in 1936, and Darrel in 1945.
Survivors include a son, Lee, of
Hillsboro; a daughter, Sharon McMa­
hon, of Sherwood; a sister, Laverna
Smith, of Vancouver, Wash.; six grand­
children; three great grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in
Portland.

THURMAN L. WOOLMAN
Thurman Leo Woolman, 80, Bux­
ton, died May 31, 2000. Services were
held June 3 in Union Point Cemetery in
Banks, with Pastor Jerry Hinz officiat­
ing.
Mr. Woolman was born Aug. 17,
1919, in Vinita, Okla., to Ora Pat and
Lizzie (Jenkins) Woolman.
He married Edna May Miller in Vini­
ta, and they moved to the Hillsboro
area in 1959. Mr. Woolman began log­
ging for private companies at that time.
While living in Oklahoma, he was a
farmer and then began drilling wells.
He retired at the age of 62.
Mr. Woolman was a member of the
Cornelius Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, and a
son, Thurman Jr.

Mortuary of Hillsboro was in charge of
arrangements.
GEORGE N. MARTAN
George N. Martan, 78, Forest
Grove, died June 3, 2000, of a stroke.
A memorial service was held June 10
in Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest
Grove. Disposition was by cremation.
Mr Martan was bom May 14, 1922,
in San Diego. He served in the U S.
Army Air Forces during World War II.
In 1945, he moved to Portland and
married Ella Gunther. They moved to
Vernonia in 1952 and, in 1957, to For­
est Grove where he owned Martan’s

Automotive Service from 1957 to 1978.
He then was a mechanic for Griffith
Roofing until his retirement in 1984.
He was a member of the church.
Survivors include his wife; daughter
April Lonzway; a niece and a nephew.

Cross, Oregon Trail Chapter.
CHRISTINE PRESTON
Additional Information
Several items of information were
omitted in the obituary information pro­
vided for Christine Preston, published
in the June 7 issue.
Mrs. Preston, 56, Vernonia, died
May 30, 2000, in Portland.
In addition to those listed in the
original obituary, survivors include a
brother, Mark Freymuller, and several
nieces and nephews. She was preced­
ed in death by a brother, Walter Frey­
muller, Jr.
She and her husband were di­
vorced in 1987.
MARION ROSE REITER
Marion Rose Reiter, 93, Forest
Grove, died June 6, 2000, in Beaver­
ton. Funeral services were held June 8
at Forest Grove Memorial Chapel, with
the Rev. Elwin Schwab of St. Anthony’s
Catholic Church officiating. Private in­
terment rites were held.
Mrs. Reiter was born September
23, 1906, in Dickinson, N. D., to
George and Antonia (Bosch) Roth. She
was raised in Belfield, N. D.
She married Joseph Reiter in 1929
in Belfield. They made their home
throughout the Belfield/Billings County

She moved to Forest Grove in 1960
and worked as a housekeeper for sev­
eral families in Forest Grove until her
retirement in 1974.
She was a member of St. Bernard’s
Catholic Church in Belfield and attend­
ed St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in
Forest Grove. She was active in the
Altar Society and the Forest Grove Se­
nior Center.
She was preceded in death by her
husband; a son, Joseph; a grand­
daughter; four brothers and three sis­
ters.
Survivors include a son, Richard
Reiter of Banks; two daughters, Cecilia
O’Leary of White Salmon, Wash., and
Antonia Wonser of Brogan; two sisters,
Rose Blackburn of Tillamook and
Magdelena Williams of Woodburn; four
grandchildren, two great grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild.
